2020 Beat Machine

Initially introduced in 2016, this absurdly complex beat-making interface is out on July 20th.

Yotaro Shuto, the electronic musician behind DUB-Russell, has been painstakingly developing a powerful beat machine since 2016. It’s slated for release this month.

Known as the 2020 Semi-Modular Beat Machine, this innovative creation for MacOS is the culmination of Shuto’s extensive performance experiences and his distinct artistic vision for beats and sounds.

The 2020 is built on two core concepts. Firstly, it aims to generate an extensive array of sound and sequence variations from a single, concise idea. Secondly, it offers a user-friendly interface that enables users to compose entire beats within a single screen, eliminating the need for constant scrolling or window switching.

With an impressive lineup of modules, the 2020 includes:

  • A sample slicer
  • The Higurashi generator
  • 3 loopers
  • 12 samplers
  • 1 kick synth
  • 4 grid sequencers
  • 2 FM synths
  • 2 Pitch Transposers

2020 comes with flexible sound routing also as each instrument module can be sent to six mix buses, three FX buses, and a send bus. The FX Bus incorporates 14 patchable modules.

At the end of the chain, the six buses can be sent to two master buses. Most but not all parameters of the 2020 can be easily controlled using MIDI, OSC, and keyboard inputs, which can be conveniently assigned in the intuitive ‘LEARN’ mode. And all this is supported with Ableton Link.

Lastly, the 2020 comes with built-in colour themes, but you can also customise your own.

2020 is out later this month as a standalone unit priced at $119.99. Find out more on their website.
