Today’s Wordle answer (game #907)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #907) is… SPENT.
We’ve got a big – and welcome – change on Wordle today, because we finally have a difficult one. No, not really! Sorry, but SPENT is another reasonably simple one, which WordleBot says has an average score of 3.5.
That means we’ve now had 11 games in a row below 4.0, marking a new record among the 500-odd games I’ve tracked. It could be that Wordlers are getting better, or that we’re just in an easy run, but either way there’s not been a hint of peril in this game for a long time.
Hopefully that will change soon, but in the meantime let’s discuss SPENT. It shares three letters with yesterday’s THESE (see below), and given how easy that one was it’s no surprise that this is reasonably straightforward too.
Once again there were some pretty good results for a few of the best Wordle starting words, though not as good as for yesterday’s game. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, and CRANE, its second top word, both left 17 options, while LEAST (11), STALE (8), SLANT (6), SAINT (5), LEANT (4) and PLANE (3) were all better still.
My opener, STARE, was also decent; I had 12 answers to whittle down. Yesterday I had just four and guessed correctly for a 2/6 score. Today, I had to settle for 3/6, because I decided to play a narrowing-down word first.
My choice was WHELP, which contains four letters which commonly follow an S at the start of a word, for instance in SWEPT, SHEET, SLEPT or SPENT. I found most of the 12 that WordleBot said I could pick from (although at that point I didn’t know there were 12 of them), but missed SITED and SETUP.
That didn’t hurt me, though. WHELP gave me a green E and yellow P, and left me with only one possible solution. I played SPENT next for my 3/6 and – shock horror! – beat WordleBot again. The ‘Bot could only score a 4/6, which is pretty poor form from a supposed expert. Am I gloating? Yes, and I have no shame about that…

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #906)
In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #906, too.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #906) was… THESE.
We’re now in the midst of a record-equaling easy run in Wordle. This is the tenth game in which the average score has fallen below 4.0, matching a sequence from September. And that, among the 500 games I have scores for, is the only time we’ve had 10 in a row like this. What’s more, that September run did have a few slightly tougher puzzles; four warranted a 3.9 score, and the average across all 10 was 3.7. In contrast, today’s puzzle has a score of 3.3, according to WordleBot, and the average for the past 10 is a mere 3.55.
THESE is another easy one, then, and that’s despite it containing a repeated E. Then again, E is by far the most likely letter to appear twice in a Wordle answer. And there are plenty of other reasons why it’s a simple one. For instance, T is the fourth most likely starting letter, and E the most common ending letter. It must also be about the most common word ever to appear as a Wordle answer.
The biggest factor, though, is (once again) the performance of the best Wordle starting words. Many of them contain S, T and E, meaning you’ll already have had three of the five letters needed here. (Well, four really, given that there are two Es.) SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite starter, left only four possible answers, a tally matched by my choice, STARE. Given that LEAST left three and STALE five, there were plenty of good options today.
The four I had to pick from were THESE, THOSE, TENSE and PISTE, all of which I came up with independently of WordleBot’s later guidance. And the good news today is that (for me at least) there was no advantage to playing a narrowing-down word – whichever of those four I went for, I’d be guaranteed a 3/6 if it was wrong. This is not always the case; often with only a handful of remaining answers there’s a need to play a specific word next, in order to maximize your chance of solving it quickly, and this usually makes more sense than guessing one of the possible answers.
Today, though, I was able to just make a guess at it – but which to go for? All four seemed likely answers (maybe PISTE slightly less so), and none were particularly more likely in terms of letters. Yes, THESE and TENSE contained a repeat, but that E is really very common and was repeated in half of the answers.
In the end I decided to go with THESE simply because it was the first solution I’d come up with – and guessed correctly for a 2/6. And that meant that… yes, I beat WordleBot (3/6) today. Hurrah!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
