Gene Richards Jr Introducing

Gene Richards Jr has been making waves in the European underground since 2020 when he debuted on Marco Farone’s UNCAGED label. Following the recent release of his hard-hitting ‘Get That EP’ we asked him to introduce himself.

Who Are You?

Gene Richards Jr. – DJ and producer.

Where Are You From?

I am originally from Ukraine but am currently located in Tel Aviv.

What Do You Sound Like?

Funky, groovy, and jackin club tracks.

Why Should We Follow What You’re Doing?

I bring a unique mixture of sounds, grooves and textures while adhering to old-school techno.

Which Of Your Tracks Sums You Up? Why?

S-FILE – ‘I AM (Gene Richards Jackin’ Cut)’ because it’s the grooviest and funkiest track I’ve created in my opinion.

What Have You Got Coming Out In The Near Future?

I have a collaboration EP with a friend of mine Fixon. It’s a five-track EP accompanied by remixes by Anne, Ritzi Lee, Alan Oldham, Confidential Recipe, and Insolate, to be released on ANAØH Records.

What Or Who Is Your Biggest Influence And Why?

Mark Broom, Truncate, Mark Williams, James Ruskin, Ben Sims and Jeff Mills. I love the fact that all of the above have a very unique groove to their sound.

What have you released so far? What else have you got coming out in the near future?

I released music on Be as One, CLR, Truncate and Rekids. In the near future, I have a collaboration with Mark Broom.

Groove Philosophy by Gene Richards Jr, Fixon

How did you get into DJing/ producing, to begin with?

Me and my friends got our hands on a bootleg copy of Fruity Loops and I fell in love with the sound. From there I was introduced to Detroit techno and the Chicago sound and decided to give it a shot.

What are three things on your studio shopping list?

I’m not a gear head but I would love a Doepfer MAQ16 analogue sequencer, a Manley Hills compressor and an OG Roland 909 drum machine.

Who or what have you sacrificed for your art?

Time with my son and friends.

Where can we hear your music?

On Bandcamp, Beatport and Apple Music.

What one song would feature on the soundtrack to your life?

DBX – Losing Control

What motivates you?

Collaborating with other artists. I really love when people send me their ideas and I can turn them into something that incorporates my own unique style.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I used to make a deeper style of music and I had a release on one of Chris Liebing’s first labels.

Complete This Sentence: “At heart, I’m just…

… a simple dude who loves music.

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve received?

It’s not what you use, it’s how you use it.

Where will you be in five years’ time?

Consistently touring, always creating new music and collaborating with artists that I respect and interest me.
