Marvel Phase 5 movies
Deadpool and Wolverine
Release date: July 26, 2024
Director: Shawn Levy
Main cast: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfayden
Deadpool 3, or Deadpool and Wolverine as it’s now known, will see Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth joined by Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine/Jame Logan for Marvel’s latest multiverse-spanning movie. Macfayden is playing a TVA agent called Paradox, while Corrin is likely playing the film’s big bad in Cassandra Nova. Read our Deadpool and Wolverine trailer breakdown and new, Easter egg-filled Deadpool and Wolverine trailer piece to find out what they tell us about the forthcoming flick.
Numerous characters from Deadpool’s two non-MCU movies will also cameo and/or play supporting roles, including Stefan Kapicic’s Colossus, Rob Delaney’s Peter, Karan Soni’s Dopinder, Leslie Uggams’ Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand’s Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna’s Yukio, and Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa. However, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil won’t make a surprise appearance, while Zazie Beetz’s Domino seemingly won’t show up, either (per Decider).
Captain America: Brave New World
Release date: February 14, 2025
Director: Julius Onah
Main cast: Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, and Tim Blake Nelson
Captain America: Brave New World, whose title has ties to a shocking Marvel comic series, will see Mackie will return as Sam Wilson/the new Cap. Matthew Orton (Moon Knight) has been hired (per Deadline) to rewrite parts of the script, with reshoots set to take place between May and August (per industry insider DanielRPK via Reddit).
Ford will portray Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, the role held by William Hurt until his death in March 2022. Danny Ramirez is reprising his role as Joaquin Torres from Falcon and the Winter Soldier, while Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns/The Leader makes his first MCU appearance since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Variety claims Shira Haas (Unorthodox) will play Sabra, who may provide another link to mutants in the MCU, while Xosha Roquemore (Atlanta) has reportedly landed a key role (via Deadline).
The film’s first footage was revealed at CinemaCon 2024, and showed Ross, who’s the US’ latest President, trying to persuade Wilson to reform The Avengers, before switching gears to an action sequence with more than a helping of political paranoia.
Thunderbolts
Release date: May 2, 2025
Director: Jake Schreier
Main cast: Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Wyatt Russell, Hannah-John Kamen, and Geraldine Viswanathan
Billed as an anti-hero Avengers-style film, Thunderbolts is being helmed by Jake Schreier, who directed hit Netflix show Beef. Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear) refreshed the original script penned by Eric Pearson). Oh, and the MCU movie finally rode out its creative storm to start filming in late March.
Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Harbour’s Red Guardian, Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Russell’s US Agent, and Kamen’s Ghost are set to feature. Viswanathan replaced The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri, too, with the latter departing due to scheduling conflicts (per Deadline) concerning The Bear season 3.
Invincible‘s lead voice ator Steven Yeun, who previously joined the Thunderbolts‘ cast as Sentry, has also departed Marvel’s Thunderbolts‘ movie due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel is believed to have tapped Top Gun: Maverick‘s Lewis Pullman to replace Yeun.
The Fantastic Four
Release date: July 25, 2025
Director: Matt Shakman
Main cast: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Natasha Lyonne, Julia Garner, Ralph Ineson, Paul Walter Hauser, and John Malkovich
After months of intense speculation, Marvel finally revealed The Fantastic Four‘s new title, revised release date, and primary cast – Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Kirby (The Invisible Woman), Quinn (The Human Torch), and Moss-Bachrach (The Thing) – in February. Principal photography will apparently start in August.
Since then, Deadline also all but confirmed that Garner (The Silver Surfer) and Hauser (role TBC) are part of the cast. Marvel has also reportedly hired The Office UK’s Ineson to voice Galactus and drafted in Malkovich in a mystery role, while Lyonne is said to have joined The Fantastic Four‘s cast, too.
The film’s first poster teased when and where the MCU movie might be set, with that rumor appearing to have some truth to it after Marvel teased some key story details that’ll take inspiration from the group’s Golden Age era of comics.
Blade
Release date: November 7, 2025
Director: Yann DeMange
Main cast: Mahershala Ali
After his off-screen Eternals cameo, Blade is getting an R-rated MCU movie. Michael Green (Logan, Blade Runner 2049) is the fifth writer to try and nail down its screenplay (via Variety). Principal photography is slated to start in late 2024, according to scooper Charles Murphy, but another leaker in Alex Perez suggests its current release date may be pushed back – for the fourth time – into 2026.
Ali (Green Room, Luke Cage) will star as the titular vampire hunter. Industry insider DanielRPK also suggests Saul Williams (Neptune Frost), joining Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) and Joshua Mikel (Ozark) on the reported hires list. Mia Goth (Pearl, Infinity Pool) is also believed to be playing an iconic Marvel villain (DanielRPK, per Blade Updates).
Don’t expect Kit Harington’s Black Knight (last seen in Eternals) or Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight to cameo, but Blade might lay the groundwork for an eventual team-up between the trio in a Midnight Suns movie.
Armor Wars
Release date: TBC
Director: TBC
Main cast: Don Cheadle
Originally billed as a TV show, Armor Wars will now be a movie, with Yassir Lester (Black Monday) writing the script. MCU fansite NexusPointNews claims filming will begin in January 2025, but no director is in place as May 2024.
It’ll follow Cheadle’s James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes/War Machine as he pursues criminals who have acquired some old Tony Stark-developed technology, and should pick up events from Secret Invasion‘s finale, given what we learned about Rhodey (or what fans have fiercely debated about him, anyway) in that series. Alex Perez also suggests Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer might appear in the MCU for the first time since 2010’s Iron Man 2.
Spider-Man 4
Release date: TBC
Director: TBC
Main cast: TBC
A fourth Spider-Man MCU movie is in early development, with Holland expected to return. Spider-Man 4 could happen a lot sooner than expected because of delays on Euphoria season 3 (which Zendaya, who plays MJ in the MCU, is a part of), too. However, in late April, Holland told Deadline that the script is still being worked on. A director still needs to be found, too, although the latest rumors are James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman) could tackle the Sony-Marvel flick.
Prominent MCU leaker Can WeGet Some Toast (CWGST) suggests it’ll tie into the MCU’s other street level projects, including Hawkeye, Echo, and Daredevil: Born Again. However, with Marvel and Sony reportedly at odds (per Alex Perez) about the direction of its plot – Sony wants another multiversal story, while Marvel is supposedly insisting on a street-level one – anything could happen with this Marvel Phase 5 film.
Marvel Phase 5 TV shows
Agatha All Along
Release date: September 18, 2024
Directors: Jac Schaeffer
Main cast: Kathryn Hahn, Patti LuPone, Aubrey Plaz, and Joe Locke
This Marvel Phase 5 dark musical comedy series sees Kathryn Hahn reprise her beloved WandaVision role as Agatha Harkness. We got our first glimpse at the show in a behind-the-scenes featurette, which you can view above.
Patti LuPone (Last Christmas) had claimed the WandaVision spin-off would arrive in time for Halloween, but Marvel confirmed Agatha‘s release date and new title in mid-May.
LuPone has confirmed, though, that she’s playing a witch called Lilia Calderu (per The Wrap) and told Entertainment Weekly that Heartstopper’s Joe Locke is playing a grown-up Billy Maximoff/Wiccan. Plaza is playing another dark magic wielder named Rio Vidal (per Deadline). There’s also speculation Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda could feature (per Deadline).
Meanwhile, DanielRPK (via the Scarlet Witch News X fan account) claims Sasheer Zamata (Tuca & Bertie) has been cast as Jennifer Kale, while Ali Ahn (Raising Dion) will play a magic-wielding detective named Alice Gulliver (via Agatha News). The Scarlet Witch Updates X/Twitter fan account also suggests The Continental‘s Marina Mazepa has signed on in an undisclosed role.
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), and Maria Dizzia (The Good Nurse) are believed to be part of the cast, too. Emma Caulfield Ford, Evan Peters, and Debra Jo Rupp, who played Dottie, Ralph Boener, and Sharon Davis in WandaVision, are also expected to return.
Eyes of Wakanda
Release date: expected 2024
Director: Todd Harris
Main cast: TBC
A surprise Marvel Phase 5 announcement, Eyes of Wakanda is a Black Panther Disney Plus spin-off that’ll seemingly debut this year. Its logline reads as follows: “Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artefacts. This is their story.”
According to Marvel’s Head of Television Brad Winderbaum (via CBR.com), it’ll comprise four episodes, has been in development since 2021, Marc Bernardin (Star Trek: Picard) has written two entries, and it’ll be an anthology show in the mold of What If…?. Speaking to Men’s Health, Winderbaum also confirmed Eyes of Wakanda, which is being helmed by Harris, will slot seamlessly onto the Sacred Timeline, meaning it’ll be an animated show that’s canon in the MCU.
Daredevil: Born Again
Release date: March 2025
Directors: Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson
Main cast: Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal, Ayelet Zuhrer, and Wilson Bethel
Daredevil: Born Again was in serious trouble after Marvel decided to give its a near-total overhaul in October 2023. However, our faith in Daredevil’s MCU TV show was restored just a few weeks later, with Dario Scardapane (The Punisher, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) confirmed as its new head writer, and Moorhead and Benson (Loki season 2, Moon Knight) installed as its new directors.
The series is now a pseudo-sequel to the one that aired on Netflix, with numerous actors returning to play the same characters in this revival. That includes Cox, who returned as the titular vigilante in MCU projects Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo, and D’Onofrio in Hawkeye and Echo.
Filming wrapped on the MCU’s Daredevil TV show in mid-April, but not before leaked Daredevil: Born Again footage had Marvel fans fearing for a beloved character. Marvel has since confirmed that it’ll be released next March, and that its likely first season will comprise nine episodes (per TVLine). With 18 episodes filmed in total, a second installment is expected at some point.
Ironheart
Release date: sometime in 2025
Directors: Samantha Bailey and Angela Barnes
Main cast: Dominique Thorne and Anthony Ramos
This Marvel Phase 5 series will see Thorne’s Riri Williams/Ironheart star in her own TV show, which is slated to arrive sometime next year. It’s been written by Chinaka Hodge (Snowpiercer) and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is one of its executive producers.
Ramos (In The Heights) will play Parker Robbins, aka The Hood, who specializes in dark magic. There are rumors Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) will portray Mephisto, a previously rumored WandaVision villain. Elden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Anji White (per Deadline) are also reportedly part of the cast.
Marvel Zombies
Release date: TBC
Director: TBC
Confirmed cast: TBC
A spin-off of What If…?, Marvel Zombies will pick up after season 1 episode 5 – aka ‘What If… Zombies!?’ – and comprises four episodes. It’ll be rated TV-MA in the US (18-plus in the UK and Australia), according to Winderbaum (per IGN), too.
Zombies will see the MCU’s newer heroes face off against the ever growing zombie superhero threat, with Shang-Chi, Ms Marvel, Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, and Red Guardian reportedly among the dwindling superhero roster. Iman Vellani, who plays Ms Marvel in the MCU, says her character is “kind of the center of the show” (per The Direct).
Rumors suggest we’ll see a zombified version of Ikaris but, given the Eternals are human-robot hybrids, it’ll be interesting to see how the infection affects him. Other supposed zombified heroes will include Captain Marvel, Okoye, Ghost, Abomination, and Hawkeye.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Release date: TBC
Director: TBC
Main cast: TBC
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, formerly known as Spider-Man: Freshman Year – which isn’t canon in the MCU – follows Peter Parker during his college days and celebrates his early comic book roots.
Tom Holland isn’t expected to voice the character, but Charlie Cox will supposedly lend his vocals to Daredevil, which muddies the canonicity waters. Based on official images shown at various comic-con events, Harry Osborn, Amadeus Cho, and Nico Minuro are part of Peter’s friendship group. Norman Osborn will be Peter’s main mentor and multiple villains will show up, including Doc Ock, Chameleon, Scorpion, and Rhino.
Production has wrapped on this Marvel Phase 5 project, but apparent cost-cutting measures meant it was in serious trouble and could even be canceled. However, Winderbaum told Men’s Health that it’s still being worked on, adding that it’s a “very high school, ensemble-driven show with Peter Parker at the center. It’s just so much fun.”
What If…? season 3
Release date: TBC
Director: Bryan Andrews
Main cast: TBC
Revealed in January via a Sneak Peek video (see above), Marvel confirmed that a third season of What If…? will be released at some point.
Little is known about the anthology series’ next batch of episodes, but Winderbaum told Men’s Health that season 3 is “where we start to feel crossover potential with animated projects”. As the teaser above shows, one of its episodes will be a comedy road trip story that stars Red Guardian and The Winter Soldier.
Wonder Man
Release date: TBC
Director: TBC
Main cast: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley
Another long-gestating MCU TV series, Wonder Man, which has been co-created by Andrew Guest and Shang-Chi director Daniel Destin Cretton, will be a comedy series that tells the story of an actor who plays a fictional superhero, but who doesn’t know he’s also one in real life. Marvel’s Wonder Man show landed DC star Abdul-Mateen II for the titular role in November 2022. Kingsley, who played Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi, is also expected to be part of proceedings (per Variety).
Very little else is known about this Marvel Phase 5 production, but Winderbaum confirmed to Agents of Fandom that the series was being edited as recently as March. The Hollywood Reporter (THR) suggests filming wrapped in April, while Deadline reports that, like Echo, it’ll be released under the Marvel Spotlights banner.
X-Men 97 season 2
Release date: TBC
Director: TBC
Main cast: Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, J.P. Karliak, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Holly Chou, Matthew Waterson, and Ross Maquand
With its first season ending on a cliff hanger – read our X-Men 97 ending explained article for more – and the sequel to beloved 1990s classic X-Men: The Animated Series enjoying plenty of critical and commercial acclaim, a second season of X-Men 97 seemed like an inevitability.
Thankfully, work has been ongoing on the show’s next installment for some time, with THR’s Borys Kit saying season 2 was on the way in July 2022. Zann, who voices Rogue, confirmed she’d finished recording lines in early May (via NexusPointNews). No other details have been released about its potential launch date, cast additions, or story direction, though.
Marvel Phase 6: every announced movie so far
Marvel Phase 5 is the primary focus of this guide but, while the Disney subsidiary continues to tweak its release schedule in the wake of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, plus the Multiverse Saga’s narrative direction after its Marvel fired Kang actor Jonathan Majors in late 2023, there are two Marvel Phase 6 films we already know about: Avengers 5 and Avengers 6.
Avengers 5 is reportedly no longer known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but there are rumors that it’ll start filming in early 2025 ahead of its May 1, 2026 launch date. Meanwhile, Avengers 6, which is still believed to be titled Avengers: Secret Wars, is expected to debut one year later on May 7, 2027. Everything else about the duo’s cast lists and plot details are a mystery.
