After a fairly considerable absence, for fairly obvious reasons, Devialet will be joining us here at Oxford Audio in order to continue their quest to measure just about every speaker going. If you have any questions about Expert or Phantom, there will be enough knowledgeable Devialetphiles on hand to answer even the trickiest question AND we’ll even be offering special deals to those who choose to expand to dual mono on the day.  That day will be the 3rd of November and it should be added to your diary right now if your speaker does not feature on the SAM list.

Devialet is a brand that love their three letter acronyms. For those blissfully unaware of just who or what SAM is, SAM stands for Speaker Active Matching in the kind of fractious grammar that only the French could deliver. The next obvious question is just what the heck does Speaker Active Matching mean?

Debuted back in 2015, SAM was Devialet’s newest innovation and was intended to correct what your loudspeaker was doing. The theory was that larger drive units, specifically bass units react slower to changes in the audio signal than a smaller, lighter driver causing phasing issues. By utilising a laser to measure the physical properties of a woofer driver (like maximum excursion or acceleration),  a measurement device that would be known as SAM lab and the known quantity of their own amplifier Devialet were able to create a digital model of exactly how the loudspeakers behave. At launch, SAM would allow the amplifier to correct the phase of the speaker’s woofer drivers in real time and protect those drivers from exceeding their maximum excursion all whilst wringing every last ounce of low frequency performance out of the speaker in question.

Yes Alasdair, but what does that mean? Well, simply put, the phase correction manifests in a huge improvement in areas of your system’s performance like soundstaging and depth. The cleaner, tighter bass output gives better rhythmic qualities to your system and the protection algorithm makes it nigh on impossible to damage one’s woofers, even when playing at higher levels. All that is needed is for your speaker to have been measured, the profile created uploaded to Devialet’s website and for that speaker to be enabled on your amplifier’s configuration.

With over 1000 different speakers measured now, the chances are that your speaker is already on the SAM list – but if it isnt – please book a space on the 3rd of November and bring one of your speakers to us.
