H is not a particularly common starting letter in Wordle: only 69 games begin with it, and it ranks in 15th place.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #905)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #905) is… HOUSE.
It’s a near-truism that Wordle answers containing three vowels are on average easier than those containing two or one. Today’s game is certainly on the simpler side of things, but we can hardly declare this easier than other recent puzzles, because they’ve pretty much all been a cinch for the past two weeks!
WordleBot says this one has an average of 3.5 – which is a mere 0.1 higher than the previous three-vowel Wordle answer, which was GUIDE in late November (game #889).
One of the reasons why HOUSE has such a low average is because 2% of players started with that exact word today. Is that a coincidence? Well, it’s certainly a little fishy, in that it’s not usually one of the most popular starters. I suspect treachery may be afoot!
That fact alone may well have skewed the average down a couple of points, because really this feels more like a 3.8 or 3.9 game than a 3.5. It’s not one where any of the best Wordle starting words cut down the remaining options by very much; of the top 20, ROAST was the most successful, and that still left 20 words to sift through.
STARE, my starter, left 24, of which many ended –OSE or -OUSE: CLOSE, LOOSE, MOOSE, MOUSE, HOUSE, LOUSE, CHOSE, WHOSE, DOUSE, NOOSE, GOOSE. Others included NOISE, POSSE, ISSUE, GUISE, GEESE and UNSEE.
I didn’t get them all, but saw enough that I knew to narrow things down by including both O and U in my second guess. Putting L in there also made sense. I agonized over it for a while, before finally picking GHOUL because the G also featured in quite a few answers. The H was pretty much a bystander; WordleBot suggested MOGUL as a better bet, and if I’d have come up with it I probably would have played it.
As it was, GHOUL proved a very fortunate guess, because as well as confirming the OU pattern it gave me the H that was crucial to my 3/6 score. Without it, I might still have faced a choice of five or six words for my next attempt. Anyway, that didn’t transpire; HOUSE was now the only possible answer and I played that next for a comfortable three.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #904)
In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #904, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it’s the second most common of all, behind only S.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was N.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #904)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #904) was… CHAIN.
It’s now been more than a week since we last had a remotely difficult Wordle, and even that (GENRE) only warranted an average score of 4.1, against an overall average for the year of 3.94. For a really tough one you’d probably have to go back to SASSY in mid November.
CHAIN is probably not quite as easy as its score makes it appear – WordleBot says it has an average of 3.3, which is super low, but much of that is due to the fact that a few of the best Wordle starting words cut down the remaining options considerably.
That said, it shouldn’t cause anyone any major headaches. Four of the letters are very common, and H (14th overall) jumps to eighth when played in position #2 as it is here. That CH combination is the fifth most likely, too.
If you started with CRANE – WordleBot’s second favorite opener and the seventh most popular among Wordlers in general – you had a guaranteed solve in two, as it left only one possible solution. CRONE (7) and CLONE (8) were also pretty good.
I started with STARE once again and had a slightly less helpful 43 answers to sift through. Fortunately, my second guess, CLING, proved a lot more successful, giving me a green C, yellow I and yellow N. CHAIN was now the only possible solution and I played that next for a 3/6. Now, can we please have something a bit more difficult tomorrow, Wordle?

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
