Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #909)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #909) is… TOPIC.
I wrote yesterday that WOULD (see below) had ended an 11-game run of Wordle answers with an average score of below 4.0. But now I’m going to have to retract that statement. I play the game very early in the day (UK time) so I can write and publish this column, and sometimes by the time the US audience has woken, the score has changed. That was the case here, with WordleBot now reporting a score of 3.9 rather than 4.0.
What that means is obviously that the record-breaking run of 11 games is now a record-breaking run of 12 – or rather 13, because today’s answer also dips below the 4.0 mark.
TOPIC has an average score of 3.7, so it’s a little easier than WOULD. That’s to be expected, because all five letters are common, four of them particularly so. P appears a bit less often – it’s ranked 15th overall – but it’s hardly an unusual letter.
The inclusion of T and C, both letters which appear in some of the best Wordle starting words, is another reason for it to be fairly easy. TRACE, WordleBot’s third favorite starter word, cut the options to just four, while TRICE was at five and REACT at 10.
My opener, STARE, gave me only a yellow T and left me with 119 remaining answers. Or at least 119 remaining words that WordleBot thinks are answers; the fact that it included the likes of TWIXT, CUTUP and JUNTO suggests it casts its net rather wider than I do mine.
Anyway, none of that mattered to me today, because I didn’t attempt to list all of the answers, being well aware that there were simply too many to make that worthwhile. Instead, I played POINT, which has worked well before in this scenario and which worked very, very well today.
POINT is a great second guess if you have a yellow T, because it moves it to the end, where it is most common, then adds in a couple more vowels and two common consonants. As I said above, P is not in the same league as T, R or L – but it is the fifth most common starting letter, so is worth including in that position.
It wasn’t there today, of course, but when it turned yellow along with the I and T, and with the O turning green, it still gave me a heap of information.
The next task was to work out what the possible structure could be. I figured the T was probably at the start, and after playing around with the letters for a while spotted TOPIC. That was the only solution I could find, and indeed WordleBot told me later that it was the only answer now available to me. I played it next for my 3/6 and was only slightly disappointed by the fact that WordleBot managed the same score.

W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #908)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #908) was… WOULD.
Hurrah! After 11 straight games below the 4.0 mark, today’s Wordle answer is finally a slightly more difficult one. Only slightly, though, as WordleBot says it has an average score of exactly 4.0. (Note: by lunch, Eastern Time, this score had changed to 3.9 – meaning everything I initially said above was wrong. Sorry!)
It’s not really hard, then, but at least it has some more challenging elements. One is that it starts with a W, which is only the 21st more common letter in the game. But then again, it is more likely to start an answer than it is elsewhere (it’s 13th in that position).
Another is that it doesn’t contain many letters that are included in most of the best Wordle starting words. A, R, S, T, R, N, C… these are the letters that most starters use. Only L (which does appear in the best opener of all, SLATE) and O (which features in the likes of CRONE and ORATE) are included in WOULD. For that reason, results were fairly poor; STALE left 49 and CLONE left 57, but that was as good as it got for the top 20 options.
You’ll have needed a good second guess in order to get home in three guesses, then, and that was certainly the case for me. My choice, STARE, drew a blank and left me with 318 possible solutions, but I always play CLOUD as my second attempt in these circumstances, and today it really worked well.
CLOUD is a great choice of second word for me because it contains two of the three remaining vowels plus the next three most common consonants that I hadn’t already used. And I couldn’t have hoped for a better result from it: the L, O and U turned yellow, while the D at the end was green.
What effect did this have? Well, I guessed that it had narrowed things down greatly, but in order to work out just how many answers were now left I had to arrange those four letters into their various permutations, for instance LOU-D, L-UOD and OLU-D. It was quickly apparent that only one of those formats, -LOUD, would yield any answers: MOULD and WOULD. I couldn’t see any others, and indeed WordleBot later told me that those two were the only ones left to me.
So I yet again had a 50/50 chance here, with no particular reason to choose one over the other. MOULD started with a more common letter, WOULD is a more common word. I decided to go for the latter for that reason and guessed correctly. And… for the third day running beat WordleBot, with my 3/6 trumping the ‘Bot’s 4/6. Nice.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
