Today’s Wordle answer (game #912)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #912) is… FUNNY.
I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but today’s game might, finally, be a little more difficult than any other that we’ve had in the past two weeks. But only a little bit. WordleBot currently says it has an average score of 4.0, but I say ‘currently’ for a reason. I’m writing this at midnight UK time, and by the time you’re reading this there’s a chance it will have dropped down to 3.9.
Then again, it may have gone up to 4.1. That’s not exactly unlikely, because FUNNY might well cause people some problems. For one, it has a repeated letter. Nor is N a particularly common letter to be repeated – there are only 23 Wordle answers, out of the original list of 2,309, which contain more than one N.
A further problem is that there are multiple words that have a similar format. If you had the -UNNY part of the word you might have guessed RUNNY, PUNNY, SUNNY or BUNNY, while the likes of FUNKY, PUNKY, GUNKY and HUNKY could also have led you astray.
Begining with one of the best Wordle starting words won’t have made much difference today, either. Only two of the top 20 choices – SAINT and LANCE – cut the options to below 50, and only marginally so in both cases. Meanwhile my opener, STARE, left 318 possibles, while WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left 309. Not good.
Still, I did at least know what my optimal next move was – namely to play CLOUD. WordleBot prefers DOILY in this scenario, but there’s not much in it. CLOUD was a little unlucky today, though, giving me only a yellow U and leaving 28 solutions still. And at this point, I started worrying.
I could see that there were now lots of Y-ending words remaining. In fact, of the 28 that WordleBot listed after the game, 23 finished with that letter. Many of those words also contained a repeat somewhere, for instance GUMMY and MUMMY and BUNNY and PUPPY and HUBBY. Oh, and to further complicate things, there were still lots of letters that could potentially feature. Seriously, there were LOADS of them. Of the possible answers I’d scribbled down, some 12 or 13 letters featured. Considering by this time I’d already ruled out nine letters, that meant that most of the rest of the alphabet could still feature!
Some cropped up more than others, though. Y was a must for my third guess, as was N, which was in lots of the options. I also wanted to see if the U went first or second, so decided to include that again. After a bit of thought, I went with UNIFY – not the best choice, WordleBot said, but a decent effort as it happened.
UNIFY gave me two more yellow letters, and cut my choices to two: FUNNY and FUNKY. I breathed a sigh of relief, because a failure was now impossible. FUNNY seemed like a more likely answer, so even though it contained a repeated letter I played that first, and guessed correctly for a 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #911)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #911)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #911) was… BACON.
When I talk about certain Wordles being easy or not, I’m generally referring to how easy they are on average. It goes like this: 1) WordleBot reports the average score for all games on a daily basis, 2) today’s Wordle answer has an average score of 3.8 and 3) therefore it is ‘easy’. It’s not a perfect system but it’s the best I have!
In reality, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Take yesterday’s answer, for example; GLOBE (see below) had an average of 3.9 – yet one of my friends failed to solve it and another scored a 5/6. Any Wordle can present problems to anyone, depending on a combination of starting word, luck and skill.
Today, I needed five guesses to solve BACON, which rather goes against me describing this puzzle as ‘easy’. But overall, more people must have solved this in 2/6 or 3/6 than solved it in 4/6 and 5/6, or that average would be above the 4.0 mark.
So, who were the lucky ones today? Well, those of you who started with CRANE will probably number among them. CRANE is one of the best Wordle starting words – the second best, according to WordleBot – and today it left only eight possible solutions. Anyone who started with CARTE or CARET (both 15), CRONE or CLONE (8 again), or LANCE (5) should also have found BACON to be an easy solve.
Me? Well, STARE left me with 185 possible answers, and I needed another four guesses from that point. This was my worst score since SASSY a month ago, but at least I had the excuse there that it was a genuinely difficult puzzle.
Here, a combination of poor choices and bad luck combined to leave me with two many choices at each stage. My second guess was CLING, which was itself a “solid guess” according to WordleBot and which cut the options down to five. Unfortunately, I only found two of them – UNCAP and NACHO – which came back to haunt me later.
I played UNCAP, because it seemed a more likely answer, and when that was wrong went with NACHO thinking it was the only remaining option. But in reality BACON was still a possibility too. And, of course, I guessed wrong.
When NACHO didn’t prove to be the answer I panicked a little, but after a few seconds of searching found BACON fairly quickly. I was relived when that did prove to be the actual answer, though!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
