Wordle hints (game #914) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #914) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Wordle hints (game #914) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #914) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is L.

L is a really common letter to find at the end of a Wordle. There are 155 games that finish with an L, and it ranks as the fifth most likely letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #914) is… SMALL.

If I asked you to name the letter most likely to be at the end of a Wordle answer, you’d say E, right? Everyone knows that. But what about the letter most likely to be repeated at the end of a solution? Ah, got you there (but you probably know what’s coming).

Yes, L is the repeatee (is that a word?) which appears more often than any other at the end of an answer, with 25 instances out of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers. That’s followed by double-S (21 answers) and double-F (13). And there endeth your lesson in repeated letter stats.

I don’t tell you all of this merely to bore you, but also to explain two things. One – some letters are more likely to be repeated than others, and in specific places too. And two, today’s answer is probably a little easier simply because that LL pattern at the end isn’t entirely unexpected.

WordleBot says people are solving SMALL in an average of 3.6, making it harder than yesterday’s ultra-simple TABLE (3.2) but still rather easy compared to some. It’s another one where those of you opening with SLATE (4% of players today) will have had an advantage, because it left only eight possible answers. There is a reason why it’s the best Wordle starting word, after all. Similar words did similarly well – SLANT left nine and STALE five, for instance, but not many people play either of those.

STARE left me with 31 options, which is an adequate if not stellar result. As is always the case when I have a green S to play with, the big question for the second guess to answer is ‘which letter goes in the second position’.

After an S, you’re generally looking at T (already ruled out for me), P, L, H, M, N, C or W, or a vowel. Possibly K too, but that’s less likely. With that in mind, I worked through the options and came up with most of those 31, missing only a couple (SWAMI and SWAIN, for instance). Then I played CHIMP – because it contains four of those S-following letters.

WordleBot preferred PLINK and told me that CHIMP was merely a “solid guess”, but the ‘Bot doesn’t always know best. Today, my guess left me with only one remaining answer, SMALL, and a guaranteed 3/6 – whereas WordleBot’s would have left five. In your face, robot!

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #913)

In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #913, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer can be a list or a flat surface.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #913)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #913) was… TABLE.

If ever there was a day when I would be justified in saying “this was an easy game”, it would be this one. Well – there’s always a caveat – for most people at least.

TABLE has an average score of 3.2, according to WordleBot, which makes it the easiest since SLEEP nearly two weeks ago, and one of the easiest of the year. And it will have been particularly straightforward if you started with one of the best Wordle starting words. Almost any of them. Seriously – of the top 20 openers, half cut the number of remaining options down to below 10. SLATE left only three, as did TRACE, PLATE, LEANT and TRADE. LEAST cut it to two, and STALE left only one.

Why so good? Well, E and A feature in most starter words, as do T and L. Some – include STALE and SLATE – feature all four of those letters. B is not as common overall as the others, and isn’t found in most starter words, but then again if you already have four letters on that first guess, solving it from there shouldn’t take more than a couple more guesses.

STARE, my opener, left nine options: LATTE, MATTE, LATHE, BATHE, ACUTE, HAUTE, TAUPE, LATKE and TABLE. I found the first seven of those… which means that yes, initially I missed the actual answer, even though it’s probably the most common word in that list. D’oh!

Fortunately me choice of second word – LATHE – made an irrelevance of that oversight. I chose LATHE because… well, you can see why. The letters L, T and H all feature in many of the words above. WordleBot said it would have gone for LATTE instead, but awarded us both a 99/99 skill score, so there was nothing in it.

LATHE wasn’t right, but it gave me enough info that I soon saw there was only one answer left. That was TABLE, so once I’d finished admonishing myself for not spotting it the first time I played it next for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
