Today’s Wordle answer (game #923)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #923) is… CHILD.
This might be the luckiest second guess I’ve ever had – and I’ve had a few! My first guess drew a blank, leaving me with 318 possible solutions, but my second cut that down to just one and I ended up with a 3/6. What a rollercoaster ride that was…
Before I get to that, though, a word on the difficulty or otherwise of this Wordle word. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.6, which is a fair bit higher than yesterday’s (see below) but still well below the overall average for the game of around 3.95. It only contains one vowel, which generally makes a Wordle harder to solve than one containing two or three. Then again, it uses very common letters with the possible exception of H. However… that CH opening combination is the fifth most common in the game, behind only ST, SH, SP and CR.
What it isn’t is one of those games in which the best Wordle starting words made a big difference, in stark contrast to yesterday’s LEARN. Only a couple of WordleBot’s top 20 choices made much of a dent in the list of words, with CLONE leaving 10, STILE leaving 15 and TRICE leaving 16. But most of the others were in the 30-50 range and a few (including SLATE and STARE) well in the hundreds.
Fortunately I had my ever-faithful CLOUD ready to play second. I’ve long used CLOUD – or sometimes COULD – as a second guess following a blank first effort, and today it served up a wonderful return of a green C at the start, green D at the end, and yellow L in the middle. I suspected there might still be a couple of options open to me, but no matter how hard I looked I could only find one. That was CHILD, and I played it next for my 3/6. Oh, and to round off a nice game, I also beat WordleBot.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #922)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #922, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

L is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. Despite being the sixth most common letter overall, it’s only ranked 12th at the beginning of a word.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was N.
N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it’s the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #922)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #922) was… LEARN.
This is one of those games where it really, really mattered which of the best Wordle starting words you began with. Or, indeed, if you didn’t open with one at all.
I don’t think it will have been a difficult one regardless of your start word, because it doesn’t have any complicating factors at all. All five letters are common, there are no repeats, and it’s about as far from being an obscure word as it could be. However, its incredibly low average – 3.2, according to WordleBot – is undoubtedly influenced by the top starter words.
Your evidence: SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite opener, left only eight possible solutions. STARE, my pick, left seven. CRANE, WordleBot’s second favorite, left just two. TRACE and CRATE were at nine, SLANT at two, LEAST at five, STALE at six… pretty much any of them will have cut the options considerably.
The only thing many people will have had to do, then, is work out which of that limited pool of words was the answer. Guessing blindly was a valid approach if you only had two or three of them, but any more than that and it may have made more sense to try to narrow things down with a throwaway guess – one that couldn’t be right, but that would rule out (or in) other letters.
That was the approach I took with BANDY, which was designed to help me choose between BEARD, HEARD, LEARN, YEARN, WEARY and PEARL. I did miss one option, though – WordleBot said that REARM could also have been the answer.
Fortunately that didn’t cause me any trouble, because BANDY gave me enough info that the answer had to be LEARN. I played that next for yet another 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
