Wordle hints (game #924) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #924) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

Wordle hints (game #924) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #924) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #924) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #924)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #924) is… THREE.

Things weren’t always this way, you know. Back in the not-so-distant past – a time we can refer to as ‘October’ – we had lots of difficult Wordles. In fact, in the period between September 29 and October 26 we had 15 puzzles of 4.0 or above, out of 28. In the past 28 days we’ve had two. Yes, two. Either Wordlers are getting much, much better at solving these puzzles, or the NYT is giving us all the easy ones now before hitting us with a bunch of toughies early in 2024.

Today’s is yet another straightforward example, with WordleBot stating that it has an average of 3.7. It’s easy despite the fact that it has a repeated letter, mainly because it’s a really common word using generally common letters.

It’s also another one that the best Wordle starting words made a big impact on. TRACE, WordleBot’s third favorite opener, left only four possible solutions, as did TRICE, while CARTE was at two, CRATE at eight and CARET at five. And though the results elsewhere were not quite as good as that, the 23 options faced by players of SLATE, or the 16 that I had to navigate with STARE, were nowhere near as plentiful as the results for many words yesterday.

I got a bit lucky with my second guess, but there was some logic behind my choice of WHOMP. Though I didn’t come up with all 16 possibles myself, the ones I did have included several that contained a W (WRITE, WROTE), P (TROPE, TRIPE) or H (THREE), and plenty more that had an O (ROUTE, TORTE, TROVE). WHOMP was the best word I could think of that included those letters, although with hindsight WordleBot’s suggestion of TOPIC would have been a safer bet.

As I said, luck was on my side. H was the only letter that changed color, which meant THREE was the only remaining answer. I played that next for a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #923)

In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #923, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.

C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it’s the second most common of all, behind only S.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was D.

D is a fairly common letter to end a Wordle answer: it’s the eighth most likely to be in that position in a solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #923)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #923) was… CHILD.

This might be the luckiest second guess I’ve ever had – and I’ve had a few! My first guess drew a blank, leaving me with 318 possible solutions, but my second cut that down to just one and I ended up with a 3/6. What a rollercoaster ride that was…

Before I get to that, though, a word on the difficulty or otherwise of this Wordle word. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.6, which is a fair bit higher than yesterday’s (see below) but still well below the overall average for the game of around 3.95. It only contains one vowel, which generally makes a Wordle harder to solve than one containing two or three. Then again, it uses very common letters with the possible exception of H. However… that CH opening combination is the fifth most common in the game, behind only ST, SH, SP and CR.

What it isn’t is one of those games in which the best Wordle starting words made a big difference, in stark contrast to yesterday’s LEARN. Only a couple of WordleBot’s top 20 choices made much of a dent in the list of words, with CLONE leaving 10, STILE leaving 15 and TRICE leaving 16. But most of the others were in the 30-50 range and a few (including SLATE and STARE) well in the hundreds.

Fortunately I had my ever-faithful CLOUD ready to play second. I’ve long used CLOUD – or sometimes COULD – as a second guess following a blank first effort, and today it served up a wonderful return of a green C at the start, green D at the end, and yellow L in the middle. I suspected there might still be a couple of options open to me, but no matter how hard I looked I could only find one. That was CHILD, and I played it next for my 3/6. Oh, and to round off a nice game, I also beat WordleBot.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
