Today’s Wordle answer (game #926)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #926) is… MURAL.
New year, new Wordle? Maybe not, but today’s puzzle is at least a relatively difficult one compared to most other recent games. WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.1, which makes it a full guess harder than yesterday’s SALTY and one of only three Wordles in the past month to have gone past the 4.0 mark.
It’s not immediately obvious why it might be particularly hard; there are no really uncommon letters or duplicates in it, after all. But on the other hand the M at the start is not all that likely, and there’s no E in it. It’s also not one that many of the best Wordle starting words helped much with. CARTE and CARET both left 16 remaining answers, but they were the only ones in the top 20 to be below 50.
For the first time in more than a year I started with something other than STARE. I’ve decided to play a different opening word each day in 2024, with the choice decided randomly by my computer. Today’s starter was LOUSE – which WordleBot informed me was “a strong opening guess,” so I got lucky with that one.
LOUSE gave me two yellows, an L and a U, and reduced the options to 34, according to WordleBot. I didn’t come up with that many myself, but then I didn’t try to. Instead, I focused on working out what kind of structure the word might take. For instance, the U could be second after a Q, the L could be fourth before a T, a D or a Y, or maybe at the end of the answer. And possibly repeated.
With those vague rules in mind I came up with QUILT, BUILT, GUILT, QUILL, QUAIL, BULLY, FULLY, BURLY, CURLY, UNTIL and GUILD. Not exhaustive by any stretch, but evidence enough that I should include a T and an I. GUILT seemed like a good option, so I played that next and was reasonably successful in that the U turned green.
The L was still yellow, though, and I hadn’t added any more letters. WordleBot said I now had seven answers to choose from, but I could only find four: MURAL, RURAL, BULKY and HULKY. The others were AURAL, PULPY and MULCH, none of which are very obvious so I won’t be too hard on myself for missing them.
I was sceptical as to whether HULKY would really be an answer, so decided to focus on the MURAL/RURAL angle. If I guessed MURAL and it was wrong, I would either know that the answer was RURAL, or would have a 50/50 between BULKY and HULKY, but with the former being more likely than the latter.
With that in mind, I guessed MURAL… and solved it! It was only later that I learned I’d had a seven-to-one shot and got it right. That’s a nice start to the year, and to a new way of playing.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #925)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #925)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #925) was… SALTY.
Somewhat inevitably given the recent run of games, today’s puzzle – the last of 2023, remember – is one of the year’s easiest. According to WordleBot, people are solving SALTY in an average of 3.1 guesses, meaning that of the other 364 games in 2023, only one, PLATE (game #670 in April), has had a lower score. That had an average of 2.9, while two others – CLOSE (#822) and TRADE (#870) have matched SALTY’s 3.1.
If you’re wondering why it’s proving so easy then look no further than the result for SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite opener and one that was played by 4% of people today. That left only one answer and therefore a guaranteed 2/6 (provided everybody spotted that it was the only solution, of course). SLANT and STALE left two, LEAST left three, SAINT and PLATE left four and my pick, STARE, left five. Lots of Wordlers will have scored a 2/6 or 3/6 today.
I was one of those who scored a 2/6, which was welcome but also a slight disappointment. Why? Well, this was the final game in which I began with STARE, my choice for most of the 720-plus Wordles I’ve played. From tomorrow I’ll be picking a different word at random, in order to inject some new life into what has become a slightly mundane experience.
With that in mind, I was hoping that the answer would be STARE, so that I’d get the 1/6 that will now almost certainly be denied me unless I get really, really lucky. It wasn’t to be, but I did still have a nice slice of luck here.
The five words open to me were SALTY, SQUAT, SAINT, SATIN and SPLAT. I remembered that SPLAT, SQUAT and SAINT were all past Wordle answers, the first of those dating from October, the second from March, and the third from September last year. I don’t usually have a great memory for past answers, but I knew SAINT had already been played after putting together my guidance on how to choose the best Wordle starting words. SQUAT stuck in my mind because of the Q, and SPLAT was recent enough that I simply remembered it.
Anyway, in my head I had two to choose from, and no real reason to favor one over the other. I went for SALTY pretty much on a whim and it proved to be the answer. That’s a nice way to end the year. But for me at least, everything changes tomorrow.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
