Today’s Wordle answer (game #935)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #935) is… THREW.
I said yesterday that I was going to improve my rather mixed performance of late, but that will have to wait until tomorrow, because I really messed up THREW.
Admittedly, it’s not exactly an easy one: WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.0, and it has a couple of elements that might have caused people some problems. The W, for one: this is an uncommon letter in general that is really unlikely to appear at the end of a Wordle answer. In fact, there are only 17 games in which it ends a Wordle, out of 2,309 solutions.
The other aspect is the ER (or rather RE), which confused me today because I thought this would be another ER game as yesterday’s was. With that in mind I played it as if it was an ER game, so when it wasn’t I had to readjust at a late stage.
It’s probably a game where opinion will have been divided depending on what your opening guess was. Some of the best Wordle starting words – including SLATE, CRANE, SLANT, STALE and CRONE – left more than 100 possible answers. But some, for instance TRACE (14), CARTE (8) and CARET (5), cut things down very nicely.
But all that taken into account, it still shouldn’t have been particularly tricky. Or certainly not as difficult as I made it look.
My start word today was the rather-useless BLOOM. I say ‘rather-useless’ – it could be helpful in some circumstances, because L and O are common letters and B is a very common starter. But nobody needs two Os in a start word, and the M was unlikely to be helpful.
As it happened, none of the letters were helpful today, because BLOOM drew a blank. WordleBot told me it was a “decent” opening word, but only gave me a 67 skill score, so I think it was just being encouraging. In fact, it must have been – because this was, by some distance, the worst result I’ve ever had for a start word. WordleBot told me I still had 1,234 possible answers left, which aside from being a pleasing number was a pretty devastating state of affairs.
What to do? Revert to the old favorites of course. Yes, I ‘cheated’ and played STARE next. However, today it wasn’t such a good choice, because though it gave me three yellow letters it still left 25 words. TRACE, in contrast, would have only left nine.
Nothing I could do about that, though – however my third guess was a definite mistake. I figured it might be an ER word for the second day in a row, but I also wanted an extra chance to identify more letters, so I left out the R and played TIMED in order to include the D. But this was a spectacularly stupid guess, because I already knew the M wasn’t included. There was so many other words I could have played.
Still, it did give me green T and E, and apparently left me with only three options now: TRUER, TUNER and THREW. In order to guarantee a correct answer on the fifth guess, rather than risk a 6/6, I played TOWER next – but I’d miscalculated again, because actually TOWER would have left two answers if the W hadn’t changed color. Fortunately that didn’t happen, so I was able to play THREW next for a thoroughly undeserved 5/6. I think genuinely might be the worst game of Wordle I’ve ever played. Things can only get better, eh? Let’s hope so.

L is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. Despite being the sixth most common letter overall, it’s only ranked 12th at the beginning of a word.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #934)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #934) was… LINER.
This is the hardest game we’ve had in a week, with WordleBot reporting that it has an average score of 4.0.
Like many of the most difficult Wordles, it’s an ER game. And like most ER games, it’s therefore hard to narrow down the options, because there are so many that have the format consonant-vowel-consonant-E-R.
The good news here is that the ‘extra’ letters are all very common. Compare LINER to the likes of LOVER (4.3), COWER (5.0) and JOKER (5.4) and you’ll see the difference right away. And the impact of those letters being included are evident in the results for the best Wordle starting words. All five of LINER’s letters are commonly included in the most popular openers, and that meant that many people had tens of words to sift through on their second guess, rather than hundreds. Examples: CRANE left 34, SLANT 28, LEAST 24 and LANCE just four.
My start word today was SPINE, which was “a strong opening guess” and also “a lucky one”, according to WordleBot. The fact that I could only score a 5/6 from here was entirely due to poor play on my part.
My scores have veered all over the place since I changed from having a set start word (STARE) to using a different random one each day. Before, I scored a 3/6 on about 75% of my games, with a few 4s and the occasional 2 or 5. Since changing, I’ve gone 3, 5, 3, 5, 3, 6, 3, 2, 5 – three 5s and a 6 in nine games is not good.
Some of this is luck, of course, but more of it (particularly today) is a lack of thought on my part. Essentially, I’ve forgotten how to play Wordle without having a set start word. My habits and processes were so ingrained after some 700+ games using STARE that I’m all at see now. And that leaves me making really poor choices like my second and third ones here.
SPINE, my opener, gave me three yellow letters and reduced my answer pool to 32, which is a pretty good result on a day like today. I should have spotted that an ER word was a possibility, but I’m so used to a yellow E without a yellow R meaning ‘it’s not an ER word’ that I overlooked that possibility on my second guess. Instead, I went with GIVEN – which, aside from not including an R, has a G and a V, neither of which are common letters. WordleBot suggested LINER, DINER, IDLER, FINER, LINED and lots more as better guesses. Any of those would have left only 1-3 answers.
GIVEN, in contrast, left 11. I did think to add the R next time round, but CROWD was again not as good as it could have been – the W was almost certain not to be included, so why was I playing it?
Anyway, that finally cut the options down substantially, leaving me only three to pick from: LINER, FINER and MINER. I decided to settle for a 5/6 rather than risk a 6/6 and played FLUMP, which gave me the info I needed to confirm LINER as the answer. Must. Do. Better.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
