Today’s Wordle answer (game #936)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #936) is… BRIEF.
What a difference a day makes, eh?
Yesterday (and on Tuesday to an extent) I played really poorly and had to settle for 5/6s on what should have been straightforward games. Today, I got incredibly lucky and didn’t need any skill whatsoever in order to score a 2/6 against an average of 4.2.
BRIEF is actually the hardest Wordle we’ve had since AGING (4.3) more than a week ago. Its difficulty lies partly in the fact that it has an uncommon F at the end; this is the 17th most common ending letter, which doesn’t sound too bad, but then again it only finishes 26 answers in total, out of the original 2,309. You’d therefore only expect one every 88 games or so. As it happens, we’ve not had one since GRIEF in game #699, which is 237 days ago – so it was well overdue. (And note the fact that the previous one was GRIEF, because that’s relevant today.)
Another factor, potentially, is that it has several other words that are similarly spelled (or that use similar letters). According to WordleBot, lots of people guessed GRIEF (obviously), FRIED, CRIED, BRIDE, FRIER and BRIER on guesses two and three.
And finally, not that many of the best Wordle starting words helped much here – and those that did generally didn’t reduce the options to single figures. WordleBot actually has a new favorite start word as of today, TRACE, and that left 25 possible solutions, as did CRATE. TRICE was better still, at seven, but that was the only one of the top 20 picks to dip below 10. And elsewhere it was slim pickings, with SLATE leaving 328, STARE leaving 185 and so on.
None of that affected me, however. For the third day in the past six my random start word contained an F, and as with AFOUL on Monday this led directly to me being able to score a 2/6.
My opener was FLIER – a word that I might genuinely consider as a good permanent start word if I was to return to having one. WordleBot said it was a “strong opening guess” and awarded me 88 for skill, although there was literally zero skill involved given that it was a random choice. Anyway, FLIER gave me yellow F, yellow R, green I and green E – and one of the best openings ever for me, in that I now had only two words to pick from.
Those words were GRIEF and BRIEF, and I had a vague sense that the former was a past Wordle answer. And yes, it was – in May last last year (game #699 as mentioned above). I was far from certain about it, but decided to go with BRIEF on that hunch and got lucky. And that gave me a scarcely deserved, WordleBot-beating 2/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #935)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #935) was… THREW.
I said yesterday that I was going to improve my rather mixed performance of late, but that will have to wait until tomorrow, because I really messed up THREW.
Admittedly, it’s not exactly an easy one: WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.0, and it has a couple of elements that might have caused people some problems. The W, for one: this is an uncommon letter in general that is really unlikely to appear at the end of a Wordle answer. In fact, there are only 17 games in which it ends a Wordle, out of 2,309 solutions.
The other aspect is the ER (or rather RE), which confused me today because I thought this would be another ER game as yesterday’s was. With that in mind I played it as if it was an ER game, so when it wasn’t I had to readjust at a late stage.
It’s probably a game where opinion will have been divided depending on what your opening guess was. Some of the best Wordle starting words – including SLATE, CRANE, SLANT, STALE and CRONE – left more than 100 possible answers. But some, for instance TRACE (14), CARTE (8) and CARET (5), cut things down very nicely.
But all that taken into account, it still shouldn’t have been particularly tricky. Or certainly not as difficult as I made it look.
My start word today was the rather-useless BLOOM. I say ‘rather-useless’ – it could be helpful in some circumstances, because L and O are common letters and B is a very common starter. But nobody needs two Os in a start word, and the M was unlikely to be helpful.
As it happened, none of the letters were helpful today, because BLOOM drew a blank. WordleBot told me it was a “decent” opening word, but only gave me a 67 skill score, so I think it was just being encouraging. In fact, it must have been – because this was, by some distance, the worst result I’ve ever had for a start word. WordleBot told me I still had 1,234 possible answers left, which aside from being a pleasing number was a pretty devastating state of affairs.
What to do? Revert to the old favorites of course. Yes, I ‘cheated’ and played STARE next. However, today it wasn’t such a good choice, because though it gave me three yellow letters it still left 25 words. TRACE, in contrast, would have only left nine.
Nothing I could do about that, though – however my third guess was a definite mistake. I figured it might be an ER word for the second day in a row, but I also wanted an extra chance to identify more letters, so I left out the R and played TIMED in order to include the D. But this was a spectacularly stupid guess, because I already knew the M wasn’t included. There was so many other words I could have played.
Still, it did give me green T and E, and apparently left me with only three options now: TRUER, TUNER and THREW. In order to guarantee a correct answer on the fifth guess, rather than risk a 6/6, I played TOWER next – but I’d miscalculated again, because actually TOWER would have left two answers if the W hadn’t changed color. Fortunately that didn’t happen, so I was able to play THREW next for a thoroughly undeserved 5/6. I think genuinely might be the worst game of Wordle I’ve ever played. Things can only get better, eh? Let’s hope so.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
