Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #983)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #983) is… SENSE.
Fact of the day: only 38 of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers have two repeated letters – and yes, today’s is one of them.
They’re clearly uncommon things, because with a mere 38 out of 2,309 you’d only expect one every 60 days or so. All of which means we’re right on schedule, because SENSE is the 16th so far (which means we’ve had one every 61 days). Although that said, the previous example was QUEUE, which was game 883 – so we waited a little longer for this one than you might expect.
However often they appear, they’re usually harder to solve than a ‘standard’ Wordle. That makes sense; given that a repeated letter tends to increase the difficulty level, two sets of them will make things worse still. I have the average score for 11 of the 16 that we’ve had so far, and between them they have an average of 4.4, against around 3.9 for the game overall, so they certainly trouble many players.
SENSE has an average of 4.1, WordleBot says, implying it’s not as bad as some. And again, that makes, er… sense – because the repeated letters are S and E, two of the most common in the game. What’s more, one of the Ss starts the word, and one of the Es ends it, and as regular readers will know those are the two most common letters in those two positions.
Lots of players will at least have gone into guess #2 with a green S and a green E, because SLATE and STARE are two of the best Wordle starting words, and also two of the most popular. However, neither were among the most successful options today, leaving 36 and 32 options respectively. Instead, you’ll want to have started with LEAST (which left eight), SNARE (10) or SANER (three).
TULIP was my random start word for the day, and the keen-eyed among you will have noticed that it contains neither an S nor an E. Or even an N, the other letter in today’s answer. With zero letters on the board and 758 options remaining, I was in trouble.
Fortunately, my second guess was a good one. Admittedly, I didn’t think too hard about it, simply playing CRANE – WordleBot’s current favorite start word. That gave me one of the two Es and a yellow N, and reduced my answer pool to four: SENSE, DENSE, NOOSE and GNOME, all of which were also on my list.
It made sense to play one of SENSE or DENSE, because playing either of the others could have left me with a 50/50 between those two on the fourth guess. I decided to go with DENSE, as it contained an extra letter – which might come in handy if I’d missed any possibilities – and guessed wrong this time. Still, I was able to play SENSE next for a still-under-par 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #982)
In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #982, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was O.
Vowels are generally less common than you’d expect at the start of a word, and O is only the 17th most likely letter to begin a Wordle answer.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was N.
N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it’s the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #982)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #982) was… OFTEN.
And so the week starts as the weekend ended: with a straightforward Wordle that has an average of a little below 4.0. In the case of OFTEN, it rates as a 3.8 in difficulty, according to WordleBot, compared to the 3.7 for Sunday’s SMITH.
That F in position #2 is probably the most unusual thing about it, given that only eight of Wordle’s 2,309 solutions have one there. But it’s also worth noting that the O at the start is only slightly more likely; there are 41 of them, which may sound like a lot more, but O still only ranks 17th as a starting letter.
That shouldn’t really be too much of a surprise by now. Vowels are an important part of nearly all Wordle words, but they are not evenly distributed across the answers. For the purposes of this column, there are five vowels: A, E, I, O and U. Yes, I know that Y sometimes acts as one too, but it would be far too complicated for me to allow for that here, given that I’d have to consider each instance individually. Sorry, that’s just the way it is!
Anyway, vowels therefore make up 23% of letters in the game (five out of 26), but they account for a massive 35% of all letters actually appearing among Wordle answers. But… when used at the start, they only number 16% of the total. So there you go: based on probably, you shouldn’t play a vowel at the start of a Wordle guess.
Of course, today it would have helped if you did, so long as that vowel was O. Unfortunately, none of the best Wordle starting words begin with that letter, so the most successful options were instead those that contained T, E and N (or that used the O elsewhere). SAINT, for instance, left 21 possible solutions and TASER 28. But none of the top 20 were lower than that, and WordleBot’s favorites (CRANE, SLATE and TRACE) left 90, 117 and 88 respectively.
My random opener was even less helpful. DECOY was not a terrible word to play, and gave me the two yellow vowels – but that still left 149 words for me to pick from.
Once again, then, my second word was all-important – and today I got it right. I played LONER, because the yellow E suggested the possibility of another ER answer, and though I was wrong on that front it worked wonderfully anyway, confirming the E and giving me a yellow N.
WordleBot said I had now had three words left, but of course I didn’t know that at the time. As it happens, I could only find two: OFTEN and ONSET. The other, WordleBot said, was OAKEN.
OFTEN seemed like a far more likely answer than ONSET, so I went with that first while accepting that I might end up scoring a 4/6. I needn’t have worried; all five letters turned green and I beat WordleBot for the second day in a row.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
