R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it’s merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #681)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #681) is… RANGE.
A bit like LOGIC last week, this is a straightforward Wordle that contains four common letters and that lacks the kind of complications to make it truly interesting. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not a major challenge and there’s a 3/6 or possibly a 2/6 up for grabs depending on your choice of the best Wordle starting words.
Some were particularly helpful today. In fact, CRANE, WordleBot’s second favorite overall (behind SLATE), was so successful that it left just one possible answer. Yes, one!
My pick, STARE, was not too far behind (8 possible answers), while CARTE and CARET (both 4) were also very good choices. Not so the most popular ADIEU, though; that left 217 solutions.
The fact that some words narrowed things down so much will be why this has a very low average score; WordleBot says people are solving it in 3.6 guesses. Well, that and the fact that it contains four of the top 10 most common letters. G is the only outlier, in that ranks it ranks 17th overall, but it’s still a much more likely letter to appear than Z, which of course featured in yesterday’s PLAZA (see below).
With a green E plus yellow A and R after my first guess, I had a hunch there weren’t many possible answers left. WordleBot told me after the game that there were eight of them: RANGE, LARGE, BARGE, CARVE, FARCE, AGREE, ARGUE and AERIE. I didn’t find the last of those – in fact it’s not a word I even know – but I got the first five. As far as AGREE and ARGUE go, I should have spotted them, but I was so convinced this was an -AR-E word, I shamefully missed the fact that it could start with an A. Whoops!
As it happened, it didn’t matter. I played LARGE because it would also point the way to either BARGE or RANGE if the G changed color but the L didn’t, and that’s exactly that happened. The G went green, the R stayed yellow and I knew it had to be RANGE.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #680)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #680) was… PLAZA.
It’s been a real rollercoaster week in Wordle. If you take Sunday as the final day of the week, it completes a sequence that goes 3.9 (DITTO) > 5.4 (JOKER), 4.0 (METRO > 3.9 (LOGIC) > 4.2 (CIRCA) > 3.6 (CEDAR) > 4.4 (PLAZA). There’s a big variation there, then, and today’s game is right near the top of the difficulty level.
Why is that? Well, it’s pretty obvious: we’ve got a repeated A to content with and also a Z in there. Taken alone they’d increase the difficulty a bit, but together they’re a right pain, frankly!
I escaped with a 4/6, and with no real danger of losing my streak. The single green A that I received from my pick of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, left me with 43 possible answers, which isn’t too bad, and things got better quite quickly. With a little more luck it could have been a 3/6 for me today.
If you started with SLATE, things were better still – you had just 21 possible solutions left, according to WordleBot, while SLANT left 25. But none of the other popular options were all that helpful, and ADIEU left a massive 352 possibles!
I didn’t even attempt to solve Wordle in two guesses today, because I was well aware that there were far too many options for that to be realistic. Instead, I played CLING: this added five new and common letters into the mix, without including the A that I already knew about.
WordleBot liked this, and informed me after the game that I’d now narrowed it down to just three possible words. That seemed unlikely at a glance – all I’d done was add a green L before the green A – but the letters I’d ruled out had made a big difference.
Three words was all I could find, too: PLAZA, LLAMA and FLAKY. All were equally likely, but I didn’t want to play FLAKY because if it wasn’t the answer I’d still face a 50/50 between the other two possibles. I went with LLAMA instead, knowing that I’d score a 4/6 at worst and that’s exactly what happened.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
