F is a very common starting letter in Wordle. It ranks seventh behind only S, C, B, T, P and A and overall there are 135 solutions that begin with this letter.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #700)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #700) is… FLASK.
We’re still in the midst of an easy Wordle period, with only one puzzle with an average score of above 4.0 in the past nine days. Today’s continues that trend, coming in at 3.8 according to the NYT’s AI tool WordleBot, which I trust to get these things right.
FLASK could be complicated, in that it contains a K (not common in general) and has an S that isn’t at the start of an answer (not common in general). How easy it actually is will probably depend a lot on what your pick of the best Wordle starting words was. Don’t have one? Well, that’s your loss, because you’re get better scores and longer streaks if you do.
Today, WordleBot’s favorite start word, SLATE, left just seven possible solutions. Another of its top picks, SLANT, left eight, while my choice, STARE, was at 17. In contrast, those of you playing ADIEU – always the most popular choice – will have had to whittle down 352 answers!
There’s an obvious connection between the three that did well above, and that’s the fact that they all start with an S. Because S is relatively infrequent other than at the start of a Wordle answer, turning up a yellow one immediately gives you a head start. It probably won’t go in position #2, because only vowels can go before it, and the fact that I already had a green A in the middle allowed me to rule out that option – I couldn’t think of any word that had the format OSA– or ISA–, for instance. USAGE would have fit, but I knew there was no E.
So, that left –AS- or –A-A. I had a brief play around with my remaining letters and established that the former was more likely than the latter: FLASK, CLASP, CLASH, FLASH, AWASH, CHASM and QUASH were all on my shortlist. Two Ss at the end was also possible, with CLASS, GLASS or AMASS.
I decided that my shortlist was short enough that I could play a genuine answer rather than narrowing things down, not because I realistically expected to solve it in 2/6 but because CLASH would work as a nice narrowing-down option anyway.
And it did – with -LAS- all green now, I had just two possible answers left, in the form of FLASK and GLASS. WordleBot also said PLASM was an option, but I didn’t spot it and don’t know what it means!
I decided to go for the non-repeating option of FLASK and got lucky: it was correct and I scored a nice 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #699)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #699) was… GRIEF.
On Thursday, I mentioned that my Wordle streak has reached the 500 mark. Well, this game brought me back down to Earth with a bang! No, I didn’t fail – but I messed it up royally.
It took me five guesses to solve it – and considering WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says people are solving it in 4.0 guesses on average, that’s pretty disappointing.
That said, I did have some bad luck today that would otherwise have seen me come home with a 4/6, so maybe I’m being too hard on myself.
In some ways, I’m surprised GRIEF doesn’t have a higher average. The fact that it ends in an F is relatively uncommon (only 26 Wordle answers do this), and though G is a common starting letter, it’s not particularly common overall, so you might not have thought to play it.
An additional complication is that BRIEF is such a similar word, a factor that definitely caught me out.
Nor was I helped by my choice of the best Wordle starting words; STARE left 181 possible solutions, while SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 329 and SLANT left 530. But therein lies a clue to the relatively low average score – because the most popular option, ADIEU, reduced it to just 11!
After receiving a yellow E and R, I was worried this was going to be an ER answer – which I hate and regularly struggle with. So, for my second guess, I played COLIN – a word that I didn’t expect to be a valid answer, but which enabled me to rule in/out five more common letters. WordleBot liked it, saying it would have been one of its top picks too – but it was unlucky and merely gave me a yellow I.
I decided to test the ER theory next, so went with DIVER – which WordleBot also loved. And to my surprise, this confirmed that actually it couldn’t be an ER answer; the E was where I thought it was, but not the R.
After that, it was a simple matter to identify that I had just two possible answers left: BRIEF and GRIEF. That was a relief, because it meant 5/6 was the worst score I could get. And lo and behold that is the score I got; BRIEF was wrong and I was left to play GRIEF on the fifth go for a disappointing score.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
