Wordle hints (game #749) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in two places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #749) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is C.
C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it’s the second most common of all, behind only S.
Wordle hints (game #749) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #749) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is R.
R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it’s actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.
Wordle hints (game #749) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #749)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #749) is… COWER.
And yes, cowering is what you might well have been doing while playing Wordle today, because it is fearsomely difficult.
Very few Wordles have an average score of 5.0 or above, as recorded by WordleBot. In fact, so far in 2023 there have been just five of them. Or rather, there have been just six of them, because COWER, with an average score of dead-on 5.0, has joined that list.
Why is it so difficult? Simple – it’s an ER answer, and ER answers are always hard to solve. The main reason is that there are just so many possible solutions that end in that format: 141 of them in total, out of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers.
That’s also why some of the best Wordle starting words were no real use today. Mine, STARE, gave me the E and R, both in yellow – but that still left me with 181 possible solutions. SLATE (329) and SLANT (531) were worse still, while ADIEU was also quite high, at 155. However, some fared much better. TRACE only left 21 possibles, CARTE was at 15, CRANE at 12 and CRATE at 11. However, according to WordleBot, even those people who started with CRANE still took on average 3.8 guesses to solve it.
The issue is that even once you’d established that it was an ER answer – which I was pretty sure about after the first guess – you’ll have had a really tough job narrowing it down quickly from there.
If you’re playing on Hard Mode, you’re in real trouble with one of these ones. I don’t, so I at least had the option to play words that included as many consonants as possible in my bid to work it out, without necessarily including my already-yellow E and R.
For my second guess, I therefore went with LINED. This had the advantage of including the E – which would point the way to it being an ER word if it turned green – while putting in an extra consonant in place of the R. WordleBot said it would have been one of its top picks, too (though it preferred RIDER).
The E did turn green, but none of the other letters changed color. So for my third guess, I went all-in: CHOMP, which included neither an E nor an R. It couldn’t be right, but it used all most of the remaining common consonants.
Finally, this gave me some success, with the C turning green and the O yellow. Coupled with the E and R, I now had C–E-. But almost certainly I had CO-ER. And that meant I was down to three possible answers.
Those were COVER, COWER and CORER, although the latter seemed a bit unlikely. I couldn’t recall any having been past Wordle answers, so it was a straight 1/3 chance. With three guesses left, I couldn’t do worse than a 6/6.
I went with COVER first, for no particular reason, then COWER second and eventually walked away with a 5/6. Not great, but that was the par score today, so fair enough.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #748)
In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #748, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was D.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer has a hole in it.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #748)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #748) was… DONUT.
This is about as straightforward as Wordle ever gets. Three consonants and two vowels in an alternating pattern; five common letters; no repeats; common word. It’s all pretty standard fare, as its average score of 3.4 would indicate.
Actually, 3.4 is a very low average score, so maybe ‘standard’ is the wrong word; this is easy! That’s despite the fact that none of the best Wordle starting words were particularly helpful. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 102 possible solutions while my choice of STARE was at 119. Of the top options, only SLANT (11) really narrowed things down much.
Fortunately for me, my second guess did all the hard work. POINT gave me a green O, green T and yellow N, and reduced my options from 119 to just one. Not bad! I found DONUT easily enough and played that next for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
