SPOILER WARNING: Wordle hints and today’s answer are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.

Wordle hints (game #769) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #769) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is E.

We don’t get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it’s the most common letter in the game, it’s only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.

Wordle hints (game #769) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #769) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is S.

S is really not a common ending letter at all – mainly because Wordle doesn’t allow plurals. It’s the 15th most likely letter to appear at the end of an answer.

Wordle hints (game #769) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #769) is… ETHOS.

It’s not often that we get four Wordles in a row with an average score of below 4.0, but that’s what we have after today’s game. ETHOS has an average of just 3.7, according to WordleBot – following 3.9 for DISCO yesterday (see below), 3.2 for HEART and 3.9 for WHEEL.

ETHOS was a particularly straightforward game for me, because my pick of the best Wordle starting words is always STARE, and today that left just one possible solution. Yes, that’s right – ETHOS was the only word I could have played next that might have been the answer (and indeed, was the answer).

Interestingly (to me at least), not everyone who started with STARE followed up with ETHOS, though. According to WordleBot, 12% went with ITEMS – which couldn’t have been the answer, because plural words are never solutions in Wordle. Some 5% went with CLOUD and 3% went with OTHER; I can only suppose that in those cases the players simply didn’t think of ETHOS and so played a word that would give them more information, even though it couldn’t be correct.

Admittedly, it did take me a while to come up with ETHOS myself – I knew that my letters could only be arranged in seven different ways (ETS–, -TSE-, ET-S-, -TES-, ET–S, -TE-S and -T-ES) but try as I might I couldn’t find a word that fit any of them. The problem was that I’d all but dismissed the ET–S option because S very rarely ends a Wordle; it begins 365 answers, but only finishes 36 of them. Eventually, though, I did consider that format and came up with ETHOS after a bit more thinking time.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #768)

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was D.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was O.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer was chic in the ’70s.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #768)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #768) was… DISCO.

Here’s another relatively straightforward Wordle word for you, one that contains the standard two vowels and three consonants, no repeats and five pretty common letters. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.9 guesses, and that feels about right.

That said, this is one of those rare games where AUDIO – not actually one of the best Wordle starting words but always one of the most popular – will have got players off to a great start today. WordleBot says that 5% of all players began with that word, and they will have been left with just three possible solutions for their second guess – which goes some of the way towards explaining the low overall average. ADIEU was also quite helpful, leaving 34 possibles – whereas my pick (STARE) left 56 and WordleBot’s favored SLATE left 64.

Lots of the options I identified ended in a Y, for instance FISHY, PUSHY, BUSHY, FUSSY, MISSY, LOSSY, BOSSY and so on. I decided to play one of them, not because I expected to score another 2/6 but because I needed to work out if the S went in the middle, and indeed whether it contained a Y.

I was right in one regard, but not the other: the S was in the middle, but there was no Y. Still, with no Y in the answer, and with P, U and H also ruled out, I now had just four possible answers to pick from: DISCO, BISON, BOSOM and BOSON.

At which point I should confess that… I only actually found one, DISCO. Quite how I missed the three B-starting words I don’t know, but as it happened it didn’t matter, because DISCO was the answer. That’s another nice bit of luck for me, then – and a slightly undeserved 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
