Today’s Wordle answer (game #812)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #812) is… LUCKY.
And yes, it was LUCKY for me, because I solved this Wordle in 3/6 guesses. Was it lucky for you? Well, quite possibly; WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.7, which makes it slightly easier than the norm.
There’s nothing particularly intimidating about it, with four common letters and only one, K, that’s less so. Even that letter is reasonably easy to find once you have a C, given the frequency with which those two letters go together.
I certainly didn’t feel very lucky after my first guess, though. I began, as always, with one of the best Wordle starting words – STARE – but it failed to uncover any letters, leaving me with a mammoth 319 possible solutions. Nor were many of the other top 20 choices much better, with only LEAST (24), LEANT (21), CLONE (16) and LANCE (5) dipping below 25 options.
I could have been staring at a poor score, then, but luck really was with me. I played CLOUD next – it’s what I always do after a blank first guess – and it turned up not one, not two but three yellow letters. Amazingly, that cut my options from 319 to just four. After the game, when WordleBot told me how I’d done, it awarded me a mighty score of 78/99 for luck for that guess. Fortunate indeed.
So, what were those four possible answers. WordleBot said afterwards that I could have played MULCH, GULCH, LUNCH or LUCKY. And for a second time in the game, I very much did get lucky.
Why? Well, you may not believe me, but I didn’t find the first three of those answers, just the final one. Honestly, I rushed it a little, found LUCKY and decided that had to be the solution. If it had been wrong, I might have ended up with a 5/6 or even – gasp! – a 6/6. But it was right and I walked away with a 3/6. Lucky me!

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #811)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #811) was… ROUSE.
We’re in easier territory today after a couple of tougher Wordles. ROUSE has no particular complications, unless you count the fact that it begins with the relatively uncommon letter R (11th most likely starter) or that it contains an S that isn’t the first letter.
The three vowels probably make it easier for many players, too – particularly those of you who, like me, started with STARE. This is my favorite of the best Wordle starting words and I’ve been using it almost continually since I began playing this maddeningly addictive game more than 600 Wordles ago. WordleBot doesn’t rate it as the absolute best (that would be SLATE), but it works for me.
Anyway, today STARE left just 12 possible solutions, which was better than any of the other top 20. I didn’t know there were 12, but that was also the number that I came up with – and I figured odds of 12-1 weren’t good enough for me to risk an outright guess on my second go.
Instead, I left out all three of the letters I’d uncovered, playing POUCH instead; I knew the E was at the end, and was confident that the S would go directly before it, given that all of my answers had that format (VERSE and WORSE and PROSE and REUSE and NURSE and PURSE etc).
I was right: the O and U turned green in the center of the word, which meant the R and S had to be either side of it. Which meant the answer had to be ROUSE and I scored a simple 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
