SPOILER WARNING: Wordle hints and today’s answer are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.

Wordle hints (game #840) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in three places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #840) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is V.

V is a fairly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. There are only 43 answers that begin with a V, and it ranks just 16th.

Wordle hints (game #840) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #840) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is A.

A is a relatively common ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today’s game is one of 63 in which you’ll find an A in this position.

Wordle hints (game #840) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #840) is… VIOLA.

I’m annoyed. Not incredibly so, but just enough that I’ll be slightly less happy for the next hour or so than I would have been. Like stepping in a puddle and getting your foot wet, or dropping the last piece of pizza on the floor. It’s not devastating, but it’s annoying.

Why? Well, because I was so close to scoring a 3/6 today that I could almost taste victory, only to have success cruelly snatched from beneath my nose. I still scored a 4/6, so not a disaster, and given that WordleBot says today’s average is 4.1, still better than most. But it could easily have been much better.

VIOLA is a Wordle of two parts. One, the first, is uncommon – namely that opening V, which is not a regular visitor to that position in an answer. In fact it’s not a regular visitor to any position in an answer, being only the 22nd most common letter in the game (or 5th least common, if you prefer). At the start it’s more likely to crop up, but still only 16th.

The other part, namely the IOLA part, is much less unusual, with all four of those letters appearing regularly across Wordle’s 2,309 original answers. However, with no E, R or T in the word, it wasn’t a game where many of the best Wordle starting words helped all that much. Most include two or three of those letters, and often an S, C or N too. Think SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, SLANT and so on. Just the A in each of those, and not at the end of the answer as it is here, either. Only STALE (19) and CRONE (20) of the top 20 starting words made any real headway, whereas my choice (STARE) left a massive 186 possible solutions.

But, but but – and there is a but – one popular starting word did perform wonders today, with AUDIO cutting the answers list to just three. AUDIO is not one of the best starting words, but it’s the most frequently played (8% of people today began with it) and occasionally it does come up trumps.

No such luck for me, so I needed a good second word. As always with a single yellow A, I played BADLY next and it worked pretty well, giving me a green L and cutting my answers down to five.

That wasn’t immediately apparent to me, and in fact it took me a long time to find any words that fit at all. Eventually, after all of 15 minutes thinking, I came up with one: VOILA. Now, I don’t know whether VOILA is a real Wordle answer, but I was so relieved that I played it immediately. Of course if I’d have looked a little harder I’d have spotted that VIOLA was also a possible answer. (Also VILLA, AIOLI and UVULA, but I never came close to finding them.)

Still, frustrating though it was to see that I had all five letters but with two reversed, it guaranteed my 4/6, so not a disaster. I’m still annoyed, though.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #839)

In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #839, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was C.

C is a very common starting letter in Wordle – in fact, it’s the second most common of all, behind only S.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #839) was… CHIME.

We’re back on easy street for today’s game, following the much, much tougher BUNCH yesterday. WordleBot, the NYT’s slightly patronising AI helper tool, says this one has an average score of just 3.5, and it doesn’t take a genius to see why.

Put simply, this is a bog-standard Wordle. It’s the classic two-consonants-vowel-consonant-vowel format. Or, more specifically, the C-consonant-vowel-consonant-E format. In fact, I just performed a little statistical analysis and it turns out that there are 33 Wordles that start with a C and end in an E, the sixth most common starting/ending combination in the game. The most common? That would be S—E, at a mighty 74 examples.

Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked by numbers. The important thing is that this should have been a pretty straightforward Wordle to solve. It certainly will have been if you began with TRICE, which was the most successful of the best Wordle starting words today, leaving just four possible solutions. CRATE and CARTE, which both left 12, plus CRANE (13), CARET (17) and TRACE (18) were all very helpful too. The fact that all of those reduced the solutions list to the low double digits (or less) will definitely hav lowered the average score today.

If you didn’t start with one of them, you’ll have needed a good second word instead. In my case, STARE left a hefty 106 options, but LINGO, my second guess, reduced that to just five. I will admit here that I stole the idea for playing LINGO from WordleBot, which used it on previous games where I’d had just a single green E on the first go; I’d usually have played CLING. Then again, that would have left only three answers, so maybe I should have stuck with my past approach.

Anyway, five possibles wasn’t too bad: CHIDE, CHIME, CHIVE, JUICE and IMBUE. I didn’t spot the fifth of those, but had the other four. Going for one of the CH words made sense, and CHIME seemed like a more definite answer than the others, so I went with that. And today, lady luck smiled upon me. CHIME was indeed the answer, giving me a 3/6 I possibly didn’t deserve.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
