Today’s Wordle answer (game #849)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #849) is… GRAPH.
Fun fact for you: GR is the most common starting combination in Wordle that doesn’t begin with an S or C. It’s the sixth most common overall, and occurs 38 times in Wordle’s original 2,309 answers. However, PH at the end of a word is far less likely: there are a mere seven of these in the game, and of those seven we’ve previously had three: HUMPH, NYMPH and GLYPH. So don’t expect to get another one for a while, because there are only three left out of nearly 1500 remaining answers!
Maybe those two details explain why today’s Wordle answer has a relatively standard average score of 3.9 – the easy start and harder end cancel each other out. It’s certainly not one where many of the best Wordle starting words helped massively. CRANE, which cut the possible solutions list down to 23, was the best performer in the top 10, but there were no single-figure results in the top 20 (PLATE, with 13, was the best I could find).
My pick, STARE, left 32 – meaning I needed a good second word. And I got it in the form of CLING, so chosen because it contained letters that frequently appeared in many of the words I’d jotted down as possible answers: GRAND, GRAIL, BRAID, FRAIL, CRAWL, CHAIR, DRAWN, CRAMP and several more.
GRAPH wasn’t among the words I’d shortlisted for that second guess, but it soon became apparent it was a contender for the third. In fact, I could only find two: GRAPH and GRAVY. WordleBot confirmed afterwards that they were indeed the only two left.
So, which to play? I couldn’t recall either being a past Wordle answer, so it was a simple matter of choosing my favorite. GRAPH had more common letters overall, so I went with that and was rewarded with a slightly fortunate 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #848)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #848) was… LEAKY.
This is one of those games where there are several similarly spelled words, which means it’s a difficult one, which is why it has a high average score of 4.2, according to WordleBot.
That EA combination in the middle is a common one, as is the Y at the end; you could have played LEAKY or LEAFY or BEADY or HEAVY or MEALY or MEATY and several others. Or you might have gone down a different route and played something like PEACH or BEACH or LEACH or LEARN. Lots of people went with all of those options at various points in the game.
It’s also unusual in that it’s a game where several of the best Wordle starting words cut down the possible solutions by a large number, but which still has a high average. For instance, if you began with SLATE you had just eight possible solutions left, while my STARE left 10. Other successes included TRACE (9), CRATE (also 9), LEAST (5) and STALE (6).
I got lucky with my second guess. I knew that LEAKY, LEAFY, MEALY, HEAVY, PEACH and BEACH were all among the options, so played a word that was designed to further narrow them down: FLICK. WordleBot said afterwards that it was a “solid” guess, and indeed it was – it left just one solution. I could see that was LEAKY and played that next for my 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
