Today’s Wordle answer (game #858)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #858) is… RETRY.
For the second day in a row, I got lucky with my choice of starting word and was able to score a nice 3/6 here. But unlike with yesterday’s game (see below), this Wordle was actually quite a tough one that others won’t have been so fortunate with.
The reason for that is obvious: RETRY has a repeated letter in it, a factor that always makes things more complicated. R is a reasonably common repeatee (if that’s a word), as these things go – there are 60 Wordle answers that included two or more of them. But 60 out of 2,309 answers is still a mere 2.6% of the total, so it’s not exactly likely.
WordleBot says the average score for today’s game is 4.1, making it the joint second toughest we’ve had in the past two weeks; only GIVEN and LEAKY (both 4.2) have been higher in that period, while MERCY was also at 4.1. And it’s only really the repeated R that could be the cause of that, because RETRY is a common word with very common letters in every position.
That said, another factor is probably the performance of the best Wordle starting words. Of the top 20, only REACT, which left just three answers, fared better than my pick, STARE (which left 11). Most words were a lot higher, with SLATE (114) and CRANE (187) far from outliers.
I had an advantage over most people, then, and I wasn’t about to let it go to waste. I didn’t know there were 11 possible answers, but I could see there weren’t many. With the E having been ruled out from the final spot in the answer, an RY ending was always likely, so I quickly came up with RETRY and ENTRY as options. The T could also have ended the solution, in the form of INERT, EXERT and OVERT – though I remembered that EXERT was a past Wordle answer (only a few weeks back, game #818), so I ruled out that one right away.
What were the others? Well, I could see RETRO and METRO but also recalled them having been previous solutions. PETRI was a possible, though. And that was it for me.
That’s only eight – so what were the others? WordleBot suggested that THERM, TWERP and TERRY could all have been answers, but I’m dubious about all three.
Anyway, my list only had five on it: ENTRY, RETRY, INERT, OVERT and PETRI. Guessing ENTRY would point the way to the other four answers even if it was wrong, whereas RETRY was a no-go at this stage because it could have left me a 50/50 for the third guess. INERT, OVERT and PETRI would all have worked, too, but I was more dubious as to whether they would be answers.
So, ENTRY it was – and though it wasn’t correct, it confirmed that RETRY had to be the answer. And as a nice bonus today, I beat WordleBot too.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #857)
In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #857, too.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #857)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #857) was… CAUSE.
Let’s talk about vowels. There are five of them (some people include Y as a sixth, but for the purposes of this column, I’m not one of them) and most Wordles include at least one. I say most, because of the game’s original 2,309 solutions, 12 don’t have either an A, E, I, O or U in them.
Two vowels is by far the most common format (1,336 answers), followed by one vowel (732). Three vowels – as in today’s Wordle answer, CAUSE – is a distant third, with 226 examples. There are also three games that include four vowels (but none that include five).
Why do I tell you all this? Because generally more vowels equals an easier game. I don’t have definitive proof of this, but I can tell you that of the Wordles I have records for, the average score for a three-vowel game is 3.96. The average for two vowels is a bit higher (3.98), while for one vowel it’s 4.02 and for zero vowels it’s 4.03. Meanwhile, we’ve only had one game with four vowels so far, AUDIO back in August, and the average for that was 3.5.
So, interesting if not quite conclusive proof that words with more vowels are easier to solve. Which makes sense, because most people include at least two vowels in their starter word and a greater number of them increases the chance of one turning yellow or green on the first guess.
For that reason, many of the best Wordle starting words cut the options down considerably today. CRANE and TRACE, WordleBot’s second and third favorite starter words, left only six answers apiece, while CRATE, CARTE and CARET matched that tally. SLATE and STALE left 13, LEAST left 12 and LANCE only seven. All of which adds up to a game with an average score of just 3.6.
My first guess, STARE, was another that performed well: I had 12 answers to choose from. Not that I found them all, missing PASSE, ANISE, MANSE and AISLE. Still, I came up with the other eight: FALSE, ASIDE, MASSE, CAUSE, PAUSE, ABUSE, AMUSE and LAPSE.
Based on those words I decided to play a narrowing-down guess, rather than trying to solve it in 2/6. And I think that was the right decision; PLUMB did exactly what it was designed to do, giving me a green U and leaving just one remaining answer. That was CAUSE, and I played it next for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
