You might think that you don’t need any clues for Wordle today, but remember: failure in this game is only ever six guesses away.
Below, you’ll find a selection of Wordle hints to guide you in the right direction. You don’t have to use them all, but there are five in total should you need them, covering vowels, starting letter, ending letter and more. And if you don’t have time to play at all, you can see the answer, too.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an L to make GL— – but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #873)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #873) is… GLAZE.
They say that lightning never strikes twice, but today’s Wordle answer proves that to be entirely untrue.
Yesterday’s Wordle word, NINJA, had an average score of 4.7 when I wrote the column, although WordleBot now says that’s dropped to 4.6. At the time, that made it the equal 11th toughest of 2023 so far. But GLAZE… well, that’s even harder; WordleBot says it has an average of 4.8.
There were two problems with yesterday’s game, a repeated letter and an uncommon letter (I did have one email suggesting there was a third, namely that it’s also not a widely used word – which is probably fair). GLAZE, though, only has one obvious issue, in that it contains a Z.
Now, Z is not as uncommon as J. It features in 40 of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers, compared to only 27 which include a J. However, 40 games out of more than 2,300 is still very low – you’d only expect to get one every 57 games. We’re a little ahead of schedule today, because we last saw one for AZURE, which was game #832 back in September.
I say Z is the only obvious issue, but my theory as to why GLAZE is seemingly tougher than NINJA is that unlike the latter solution, there are lots of other words that have a similar format to GLAZE. The –A-E format is incredibly common, and there are also lots that look like -LA-E, for instance BLADE and PLATE and FLAME. Worse still, there are a couple that also begin with a G; you could have played GLARE or GLADE for instance, and both are arguably more obvious than GLAZE.
On the plus side, some of the best Wordle starting words did cut the options list today, which couldn’t be said of yesterday’s game. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 13 possible solutions, while STALE was at 14 and LEAST at 15. My pick, STARE, was not too bad either – I had 27 options left, compared to more than 100 yesterday.
I didn’t try to solve it outright on the second guess, instead playing BLIND in order to narrow things down further. I think this was the right decision: BLIND was “a solid guess” according to WordleBot, but by cutting the options to only four, I’d say it was worthy of slightly higher praise.
Those four were quite obvious: PLACE, FLAME, FLAKE, GLAZE. And with four guesses remaining, I couldn’t now fail and lose my streak. But I decided not to guess yet even so, because I didn’t want a 5/6 or 6/6. Instead, I settled for a 4/6, playing MAGIC in order to guarantee solving it on the next go. If the M had turned yellow the answer would be FLAME, if the G then GLAZE, if the C then PLACE and if none of them then it would have to be FLAKE.
The plan worked, with that G turning yellow and confirming that the solution was GLAZE. I played that next for my 4/6 score.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #872)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #872, too.

N is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Only 37 games begin with it and it ranks just 18th in this regard.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was A.
A is a relatively common ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today’s game is one of 63 in which you’ll find an A there.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #872) was… NINJA.
Wow! Today’s game is the 312th so far in 2023, and according to my records NINJA is the equal 11th most difficult in that time.
Want proof? Well, WordleBot, the NYT’s know-it-all AI helper tool, reveals the average score of each game, based on the totals of all those who played it. I maintain a list of those scores, so that I can place each game in context.
NINJA has an average score of 4.7, WordleBot says, so by that measure, the only tougher ones this year have been JAZZY (5.5), RIPER (5.4), JOKER (5.4), NANNY (5.2), KAZOO (5.1), VERVE (5.1), COWER (5.0), FROZE (4.9), MAGMA (4.9) and DADDY (4.9). BORAX, FOLLY and BROOK, meanwhile, all matched NINJA on 4.7.
As regular Wordlers are no doubt aware, that list above is a veritable rogue’s gallery of past answers. Some of those have been truly hateful: RIPER and FOLLY were both 6/6 scores for me, while most of the others were 5s.
One thing that many of those words have in common is a repeated letter: of the 13 answers listed above, nine have a repeat. Another regular feature is an uncommon letter, specifically an X, Z, Q or J. Five also have one of those.
NINJA, bless its cotton socks, has both a repeated letter (N) and an uncommon letter (J) – so it’s no surprise that people are finding it a tough nut to crack.
It’s certainly not a game that many of the best Wordle starting words helped with. Only two of WordleBot’s top 20 options cut the remaining answers list to below 20, namely SAINT (13) and LANCE (9). Neither of those are particularly popular choices, though, and the likes of SLATE (197) and CRANE (63) left plenty of solutions.
That was also the case with my opener, STARE, which gave me only a single yellow A and which left 186 options. This is the same pattern as the one we had for MANIA on Saturday, and as with that day I followed up with BADLY. On that day, it cut my options list to 25 but I was somehow able to turn that into a 3/6 score due to a massive bit of luck on my third guess.
This time, BADLY left me with 28 answers, so even worse than on Saturday. And this time, there was to be no reprieve. I went with AMONG next, which I figured was a good bet because all four of the ‘new’ letters were relatively common. And it was a good guess, in that it cut my remaining answers to two: NINJA or UNCAP. But it wasn’t correct.
Still, I did get lucky with my fourth guess, going with NINJA because I decided UNCAP might not be an actual answer whereas NINJA probably would be. My hunch was right, so I scored a 4/6 on a day when that actually proved to be a decent result.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
