Today’s Wordle answer (game #874)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #875) is… ACTOR.
I made a bit of a mess of this Wordle, turning it into a game of chase-the-yellow-letters-around-the-board for a couple of guesses before eventually solving it on the fourth attempt.
Others will almost certainly not have found it so frustrating, given that WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.6 guesses. That’s not quite as low as yesterday’s LEASH (see below), which had a 3.2 average, but still well below the norm for Wordle, which is around 4.0.
There are no real complications to it, so that lowish average should not be a surprise. All five letters are common, although C sits just outside the top 10 most overall, and is not very often found in position #2 in an answer. But as a word, it’s about as common as they get.
Some of the best Wordle starting words made it easier still: CRATE left only one remaining answer, while TRACE left two and CARTE three. Plenty of people will have scored a 2/6 today.
I was not one of them. STARE gave me three yellows and cut the options to 17, which was pretty good. But the next two guesses were a little unlucky, with PARTY cutting the number to five and then TRIAL – which was one of those five – narrowing it down to a single option. That was ACTOR and I finally played it next for a 4/6 score.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #874)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #874) was… LEASH.
It’s been a while since I’ve scored a 2/6. In fact, you’d have to go all the way back to September, when I (implausibly) managed three of them in a row for STONE, BRUSH and CAROL.
In those cases, my task was made easier by the fact that all three were straightforward games, as proven by their low average scores of 3.4, 3.6 and 3.8 respectively. Today’s answer, LEASH, is seemingly simpler still – WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.2 guesses.
That may make today’s game one of the biggest swings from the previous day in Wordle history. Thursday’s GLAZE had an average of 4.8, making it the 11th toughest of 2023. LEASH, in contrast, is the equal-fourth easiest.
Is it really so easy? Well, as always, it depends. Certainly it’s on the simpler side of things, with no repeated letters and no really uncommon letters either. H is the closest to an outlier – it’s only the 14th most common letter in the game overall, whereas the other four are all in the top 10. However, H is the sixth most likely letter to end a Wordle, so it’s not really so uncommon in context.
It’s a common word, too, so that’s not a factor as it might have been for NINJA and ARDOR and PIQUE, all of which were quite tough. No, there’s nothing to be scared of here. But all that said, exactly how easy it was will probably have depended on your choice of the best Wordle starting words, or indeed whether you used one at all.
Why? Well, SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite and the fourth most popular among Wordlers, left just a single answer today. What’s more, so did STARE, my favorite and the third most commonly played opener. Between them, those two words constitute 8% of all games. That’s 8% of people who almost certainly scored a 2/6 today.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
