Today’s Wordle answer (game #891)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #891) is… TAWNY.
This is more like it. For the first game in six, today’s Wordle has an average score of above 4.0 (it’s currently at 4.1, according to WordleBot) and might cause a few of you some problems. It’s not horrendously difficult, but it’s a relatively uncommon word as these things go, and includes a W; not a letter many people play in Wordle.
On the flip side, it will have been made markedly easier if you began with one of the best Wordle starting words – or rather, one of three specific starting words. SLANT left only two possible answers, while SAINT and LEANT reduced it to one. Other words will undoubtedly have had similar results, but they were the standouts from the top 20 or so.
STARE, my pick, left 87 – and left me with some work to do. Enter, stage right, a very lucky second guess.
With a yellow T and a yellow A, I decided to move those to letters to their most common positions; A in the second slot and T at the end for -A–T. I wanted another vowel in their, and I follows A nicely whereas O doesn’t, so I had -AI-T. I could have gone with -AU-T instead, but I is a more common letter overall. And then I just needed to fill those gaps with two common consonants. P and N fit the bill to give me PAINT.
Did it work? You bet! The A and N both turned green, and though the T stayed yellow I was now fairly sure it would start the word. I did quickly investigate whether there were any words with the pattern -ATN-, but I couldn’t think of any.
So I had TA-N- and for a while this foxed me. I played around for a while with letters that could go between the A and N and eventually realized that W worked if I put a Y on the end for TAWNY.
I didn’t know this was correct, of course, but it seemed like a good guess. And so it proved to be – because it was the answer. WordleBot told me afterwards that it had been the only remaining solution, so really the hard work here was done by my second guess, and not for the first time. I’m pleased with a 3/6 there, not least because WordleBot could only score a 4/6 itself…

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #890)
In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #890, too.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #889)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #890) was… SOLID.
Another day, another seemingly easy Wordle. Maybe we’ve completed all of the difficult ones now. Or maybe all of you Wordlers are just getting too smart at solving these five-letter conundrums.
I said that yesterday’s GUIDE was straightforward (and it was), but SOLID has an even lower average score of 3.3 (compared to GUIDE’s 3.4). I don’t know why, particularly, other than that all five letters are common, as is the word itself. It’s not remarkably easy – but it does have a remarkably low score. Maybe lots of people just got lucky.
I did with my second guess, though not with my first. I began with STARE, as always; it’s one of the best Wordle starting words and I’ve been playing it through almost my entire Wordle journey. Today it gave me a sole letter, a green S, and left 93 possible solutions. If I’d have played SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, I’d have had only 20.
My go-to second word when faced with a single green S is PYLON, a word that works in lots of other situations too. It’s unusual in that it includes a Y but not at the end. That enabled me to play three other consonants (P, L and N), rather than probably being able to play only two if the Y was at the end. That’s not a hard-and-fast rule – there are plenty of Y-ending words that include three other consonants (including, um, PLENTY), but not many that also include an L and N. NOBLY is the only other one I can think of.
Anyway, I went with PYLON and it performed amazingly well; I got a green L in the middle of the answer and a yellow O.
I now had two possible formats: SON– or S-N-O. I quickly established that there were no options for the latter, and after a bit of thought decided that there was only one that fit the former: SOLID. I played that next for a simple 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
