Finally! After a run of pretty easy games, Wordle today is slightly harder. WordleBot says people are solving this one in an average of 4.2 guesses, making it the toughest we’ve had since CRAVE last Monday.

It’s also one of those games where even the best Wordle starting words won’t have helped that much – although I recommend you use one anyway.

I’m a Wordle addict who’s been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my hints and clues to Wordle #597.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Wordle today and Wordle yesterday are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know the answers.

Wordle today (game #597) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has one vowel*. (Need another hint? Next I’ll tell you what the first letter is.)

Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle today (game #597) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is N. (Want a third hint? I’ll also tell you if there are any repeated letters.)

N is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Only 37 games begin with it and it ranks just 18th in this regard.

NAIVE (game #540) was the last time we had a Wordle answer that started with an N, back on December 11, 2022.

Wordle today (game #597) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle. (I’ve got one more hint if you need one below.)

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle today (game #597) – hint #4 – final clue

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #597, is… NINTH.

Every so often, a game just doesn’t go your way. I don’t think I played today’s Wordle particularly poorly, but I still contrived to score a 6/6 with it – only my 17th of those in 399 games. Despite that, WordleBot awarded me a 90 skill score, against a global average of 84. So, what went wrong? Well, my luck score of 33 tells that story.

Things started badly. My choice of the best Wordle starting words today was STARE, but it served up just a single yellow T and (according to WordleBot) left me with 119 possible answers. Not that many others would have been that much better. SLATE left 45, CRANE 80 and CRATE 53. SLANT was a bit better (34) but of the popular choices only SAINT (14) was close to single figures.

My second guess of CLOUT admittedly wasn’t the best, but WordleBot still awarded it 88 for skill. However, it failed to uncover any further letters and still left me with 19 possible answers. A luck score of just 8/99 here is further evidence for the gods being against me.

At this point, I thought I’d better try to identify some of the possible answers and came up with 13 of them: THINK, THING, FIFTY, TINNY, TIZZY, WITTY, KITTY, DITTY, BITTY, WIDTH, FIFTH, TIMID and PITHY.

The ones I’d missed, according to WordleBot, were THIGH, NIFTY, MINTY, DITZY, TYING and NINTH. That last one would come back to haunt me.

Given how many answers ended with a Y, I definitely wanted to include one in my third guess. Putting an I in there made sense too, as did an H. PITHY therefore seemed like a good choice to narrow it down, but WordleBot didn’t like it much, proclaiming “This guess wasn’t my favorite.” Great, thanks for that helpful feedback!

I’m not entirely sure why it didn’t like it, as it successfully reduced the possible options to just three: WIDTH, FIFTH and NINTH. But somehow I still hadn’t spotted NINTH as a word that fit – I have no excuse beyond stupidity.

Faced with what I thought was a 50/50, I chose WIDTH… and got it wrong. No matter, I thought, let’s play FIFTH instead. When that also proved to be incorrect I endured a minute of panic before realizing that fortunately NINTH was the only word that still fit and scoring my 6/6.

Not my finest hour, then, but further proof that this game should never be underestimated. Yesterday I was complaining it was too easy, today it nearly made me eat my words.

Wordle yesterday (game #596) – hints

In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some hints for Wordle #596 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was D.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is a rhythmic movement.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #596, was… DANCE.

This is about as easy as Wordle gets. The NYT’s WordleBot tool says people are solving it in 3.4 guesses, and there’s really nothing to be scared about here at all.

It was particularly simple if you use one of the best Wordle starting words. And if you don’t, then you should. CRANE, WordleBot’s second-favorite word, left just two possible solutions. TRACE, CARTE, CRATE and CARET left three.

My own choice of CLEAR wasn’t quite so helpful, but it gave me a yellow A, E and C, and a mere 18 options to whittle down from there.

I figured that SPACE was a good second guess, because it gave me the –ACE ending that was common to SPACE, PEACE and APACE, while including two common letters in S and P.

WordleBot rated it at 98/99 for skill; it said that SPATE was supposedly a better choice, but given that doesn’t contain a C, it couldn’t have been the answer. I think SPACE was therefore a smarter pick.

It wasn’t right, but it gave me green C and E at the end and left me with just one possible solution: DANCE, which I quickly spotted and played for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
