Jesabel - Control

Having arrived in Britain to pursue her music career, Jesabel’s latest single, ‘Control’, is out now. We asked her to introduce herself.

Who are you?

Hey! I’m Jesabel. A DJ and producer.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Sydney, Australia, but I moved to London in December 2022 to pursue my crazy passion. Now I’m not sure I see myself ever leaving!

What do you sound like?

Emotive, impactful, and groovy. When people hear my music, I want them to have that goosebumps feeling with all of the nostalgia and even slightly melancholic.

I’ve left all my family and friends and my existing career in Australia to chase my music dream in London.

Why should we follow what you’re doing?

A lot is coming! I don’t want to be cliche, but I’ve worked really hard over the last year and a half in the studio to bring my audience, present and future, a solid release schedule for 2024 and beyond.

In addition, my focus is on performance moving forward, starting with some really exciting shows at iconic London venues with Parable for 2024.

Which of your tracks sums you up? Why?

Ah! This is a tough one!

I’d say one of my yet-to-be-signed records is ‘All The Time’. The record itself is emotive and uplifting, and the vocal has a message that is easy to resonate with—lost love.

What have you got coming out in the near future?

I’m excited to have signed a deal with Enhanced Recordings and Zerothree. I’ve got a load of music coming with these guys. I’m so stoked to be working with each team. They have been hugely supportive so far and have really harnessed my project.

As a team, we have hopefully developed some unavoidable tunes! We have some big, ethereal, emotional tunes coming, coupled with records made to keep the dance floor grooving. Watch this space!

[quote align=right text=”Production-wise, I have always dipped my toe in but didn’t feel like I had the opportunity to explore the music style I truly wanted to from Australia”]

What or who is your biggest influence and why?

Where do I start?! I feel influenced by everything, and I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing!

I always say I’ve been blessed with ears that love many different styles and genres of music. This is great for hearing nuances and details in anything from techno to pop or even just a sound on the street.

Artist wise I’m drawn to a lot of what Cristoph does; he doesn’t miss…ever! Also, Eric Prydz (God!), Stephan Bodzin, Yotto, Dosem and Boxer. All of them are unreal producers.

How did you get into DJing/producing to begin with?

I started DJing nearly 11 years ago. I was always musical growing up, and I watched a friend DJ at a house party one night. He went on to teach me in the local pub on a Wednesday morning. I ended up doing my first gig in that pub on a Friday night, and that was the start of a solid DJ career across Australia, South-East Asia, and New Zealand.

Production-wise, I have always dipped my toe in but didn’t feel like I had the opportunity to explore the music style I truly wanted to from Australia. At this point, I thought, if I was going to give this a good nudge, I needed to go overseas. That’s when London happened.

What are three things on your studio shopping list?

I’m in desperate need of a new set of studio headphones, a new MIDI keyboard, and some soundproofing! If you have any recommendations, please send them my way!

Who or what have you sacrificed for your art?

I’ve left all my family and friends and my existing career in Australia to chase my music dream in London. Does that count?!

In all seriousness, I’ve most definitely made the biggest sacrifice of my life in moving overseas. A life change like that can really affect your mental health, and being removed from my comfort zone really has increased my anxiety levels tenfold.

That being said, exposure therapy is definitely a thing, and as life in London becomes more habitual, my comfort zones have begun to expand!

What’s been your favourite place to play so far?

Koko, Camden, an iconic London venue as the main support for Camelphat. It was an absolutely surreal experience.

Where can we hear your music?

Wherever you listen to your music – Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube…everywhere!

What one song would feature on the soundtrack to your life?

‘Need You Tonight’ by INXS. I will literally never get over this record.

What motivates you?

The idea that every move I make towards my goals, no matter how big or small, is a step closer to where I want to be. To believe is to receive…yuck cliche much! But true.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I’m a dual citizen of Australia and the U.K., so I’m not going anywhere London!

Complete this sentence: At heart I’m just a…

…ordinary girl with an extraordinary job.

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve received?

Without risk, there is no possibility, and without potential loss, there is no prize. Consistency is key.

Where will you be in five years’ time?

Forging my path in the dance music industry with an ever-growing community of amazing, like-minded music lovers to share it with!

Jesabel ‘Control’ is out now on Zerothree.
